By the way, let's save that for another day (or wait to see if it happens). I only said it as a joke to JT. Back to Calz-Jonesy....
Thats the thing, JC has been intimating that he wants to fight at medium pace to pick his shots more. Thats the only thing that is making me think RJJ will win, if Calzaghe sits back
It could be Joe's smokescreen though- I hope so. I want to see a loads of punches thrown and some great action, not some chess match crap. I'd watch it in the morning if I thought that. :think
with MOTD (worth watching for the 4th week running, just!) on late tonight, I cant see me staying awake all the way through.
Jones style at this time doesn't revolve around amazing performances. It's safety first even more so then in his prime. Trinidad/Jones was probably a worse fight then Calzaghe/Hopkin's, for starters. Jones hasn't accomplished anything of any worth in years, to boot. Bernard's style doesn't equate to great looking performances in recent years either, which makes it even more amazing, what he accomplished. Just don't see a impressive "performance" from Jones win or lose. He's going to frustrate Calzaghe or nothing.
cheers mate. The only thing Jones has going for him to an extent IMO is styles. Calz isn't a huge hitter and doesn't go out there looking for a stoppage much. Personally i think Jones only real chance is to stop Joe, but he's not exactly that easy to stop. For some reason i keep thinking i would not be surprised to see Jones on the floor, and earlier than people think. Lord knows why, because it's not exactly getting bandied around. We've seen Jones struggle with an innocuous looking punch before. Could his chin be totally shot? He took eons of time to recover when hurt in that last Tarver fight, if Tarver had anything left or did what he should have Jones was gone. I thought it was a pretty lame effort from Tarver at that point. IF, and it's a big if, Calz has the power and hurts him i cannot see Jones surviving. The big question is Calz's power vs Roy's chin. Also, tho i see a lot of talk that Roy will fight cautious and Joe won't get to him i am not so sure myself that Jones at this career stage can keep Joe out even in safe mode. Joe is the sharpest fighter Roy has fought for 125 years. Oh, and Roy would no doubt make top 5 wins of the decade, just behind Hop - Pav, Hop - Tarver and Hop - Winky of course :happy
Anyway...very enjoyable fight. I was quite impressed that Jones had that much left actually. He went 12 fast paced rounds. An ok performance, I thought, considering he's against an on-form Calzaghe. I thought the cards were a bit wide- I think 9-3 was my card (in my head).
Yeah, that was actually a very entertaining match. I didn't expect that. It got morbidly depressing at times with Jones being battered around... Calzaghe really mauls fighters at times. But hey, Jones did drop him in the first. I laughed pretty hard at Calzaghe's deja vu attack in there.
Yeah mate, unfortunately my feed was a bit staggered but a reasonable effort i guess. I did catch him landing a couple of pretty hard hammers actually. I'd really like to see him retire now, but would not be surprised to see him and Hopkins signed.
I couldn't bring myself to watch it as I've always liked Roy and seeing him against an elite fighter like Calzaghe at this stage of his career wasn't something I wished to see. I'm glad to see he at least finished on his feet and managed to floor Joe but I can't believe so many knowledgable posters thought a Jones win was possible. In comparison to what he once was he's looked like absolute **** since 2004 and in a taxing game like boxing recapturing your prime at 40 years of age isn't going to happen. I hope Roy retires as he's through and he's only giving knuckle-headed general forum haters of him more ammunition to use against him if he keeps fighting and losing.Hopkins can get away with fighting as an old man but Roy (like most other fighters) can't.I'd hate to see him be another Evander Holyfield who it breaks my heart to still see fighting. As for Joe well done.I wish it had've happened back in 1996-7 as I'm sure it would've been a great fight with a different result, but no cake walk for either man that's for sure.Joe's still got plenty left and a fight with Dawson is a natural now, although I don't think it'll happen. It's a high risk low reward type of fight and a big threat to Joe's unbeaten streak but for his legacy it would be an awesome note to finish on.
I have a feeling, Jones hasn't done this for so long, that he is actually no longer aware that winning a fight by knockout is a completely legal win, you don't get jailed or even disqualified for doing this. Or, at least, for attempting to do this. Nobody can persuade me he couldn't have finished badly hurt Calzaghe in the first round had he actually tried to. What he's coming to the ring for, I no longer understand. Benn-McClellan had been 13 years ago, god damn it! Maybe narrower, like 8-4 by rounds, but this fight caused me nothing by irritation or even disgust, despite my being a fan.
You don't think by any chance that he's just too scared to engage now, given he's been ko'ed a couple of times and doesn't have the reflexes to mix it as safely as he once did? I do. His comments post Tarver III support this as does his cautious approach even when undoubtably behind, especially given his power.
