As if you wouldn't have found another reason to have go at Calzaghe. It would have been "those slaps were a disgrace", "he's a lowlife for even taking the fight"... ad infinitum.

think you're going well overboard on this sweetpea. sadistic is far to strong a word. if joe could have finished it he would have, he just doesnt have the power. he went after the cut which is what he should have, and he danced about a bit and put on a show. thats it.

Again, you're giving it the "show for the crowd" spiel. You think the opponents enjoyed these 'shows'? :huh

Well, it's on again in 15 minutes and I'll rewatch it as I was too wrapped up in the fight last night to notice how bad it was.

That's what I thought. I think Joe was thinking Roy was very much still 'live'. However, I need to get the kids' cartoons off and watch it again to properly comment. :good

It's not like he did it all the time though, not against completely overmatched opponents like Frazier anyway. He'd typically carry these guys and put on a show just to give some substance to the matchup rather than blowing them out of the water or making it a lackluster affair while he was carrying them.

I'll do the same. I was switching between about 20 different streams last night, so it was hard to keep up with the action through and through honestly.

I wonder if anyone should disrespect any fighter courageous enough to step into the ring regardless of his "calibre".

Calzaghe can't win me over. I've never been a fan. I do respect him a great deal and give him credit though.

Everyone keeps saying Jones was a shot fighter. Jones is not what he was 6 years ago. No 39 year old in peak condition is physically equal to what they would be at peak form at ages 32 or 33. However, Jones was not shot. Jones hands were faster than any 39 year old I've ever witnessed, his legs were good enough to move him away when needed, and he was landing significant punches.

Jones' main problem is that he still wants to fight like he could the better part of a decade ago. Jones attributes have aged gracefully, his style hasn't. Emanuel Steward kept commenting on how Roy was struggling in large part because he could not land his lead right at will. That was something Jones has almost always been able to do. What he needed last night was a jab. An orthodox jab is not always thought of as effective punch against a southpaw, but Jones had success with his the few times he used it. If he had got his jab going, maybe he could have started to build off it. Jones has just never learned to be that type of fighter.

Jones was a live opponent til the end last night; throwing fast hard shots until the last round. Jones was also talking the whole way. The scores may have been one sided, but the fight was anything but. I had the fight closer than the judges. At worst, I only saw Jones losing 9-3 in rounds. You could even argue 8-4. I though Jones won the first and second, and I think he landed the more significant shots when Calzaghe coasted a bit in the middle rounds. Calzaghe said he was hurt in the first round. I'm sure he was still very much aware of how crisp Jones was punching even late in the fight.

Calzaghe did not defeat a peak Jones, but I refuse to say he was in the ring with a corpse. After witnessing the shape Jones was able to get into, the amount of form Jones was able to regain, and the effort Jones exerted making this fight competitive; saying he was shot is far more disrespectful than anything Joe did to him.

When people talk about the Rocky flims ,I think about Stallone's arm punching, the inane dialogue and the homoerotic slow motion beach scenes between Rocky and Apollo Creed.

So they probably have a point...:yep

BTW I can really appreciate Joe's masterful footwork, boxing ability and conditioning.
As with most, his tasteless attitude in the ring and ugly volume punching technique really lower my opinion of him compared to the ATGs...
Besides....what does he care what we think?
