Your thoughts, made on the assumption that the man never steps into the ring again.

He'll be regarded as another modern day fighter who could have done so much more with his talent. The list of people he could have fought at one point or another and didn't is incredible. Margarito, Cotto, Freitas, Witter, Casamayor, Hamed, Mosley and quite a few more. Sure, not all are great fighters but they would have been nice additions to his resume. I think he could have made the top 20 of all-time if he had the desire to do so. Possibly even top 15.

If he does retire, I'd sum up his career with one word. Dissapointing.

.............As much as I hate the little puke, he was great.

He will return to the ring, I have no doubt about that. But if he doesn't his place in history is secure.

Somewhere in the bottom half of the top 100 would seem right, unless you are really high on him head to head.

Mayweather maybe hasn't had over 100 fights and fought in the 30's and 40's, but H2H he matches up well against anyone in history at 130 and 135, 140 as well probably. I was always a Mayweather fan. His style and skills are to my taste.

Like it or no Mayweather is an all time great possibily top 10.
At 130 he is consered to be one of the best if not the best.
    He won tittles at 130, 135, 140, 147 and 154.
Could he have done more? Without a dobut not taking on the Cotto/Margarito winner will hurt his leagacy however he is still an ATG.
This us asumeing he stays retired.

Why is the notion of having 100 plus fights as a pre-requisite for greatness?

During the 30s 40s fighters didnt have the extensive amateur careers that the more recent fighters have had and therefore pro fighters today have fewer professional fights.

Mayweather is great when all is said and done.

It would be nice if he were to fight Cotto....

.............He's not suggesting 100 fights is the magic mark, he's just saying that even in this age (the worst ever for boxing for many reasons) there is room for greatness, and he's hit the mark.

Bull****. He's not retired. Saying is one thing, doing is another. He'll fight again when it suits him.

Top 40 now might go as low as top 20 as the years pass.

I think its plausible he rates somewhere near Roy Jones. Jones has the better resume but those 2 devastating knockout losses bring him down a bit. Mayweather has a great record and head to head is IMO arguably the best ever. He relied on athleticism like Jones but was also technically perfect and could fight with a variety of styles and adapt his fight strategy. As a boxing fan its really dissapointing he is retiring now, he was the epitome of boxing skills and it was a pleasure to watch him fight.

Now its time to go watch Mayweather-Corrales

............I disagree that Jones has the better resume. Mayweather's outstrips his by far.
