Wlad is ok and would try hard, but Louis is a giant in boxing history and in any era would massacre him.
he is clumsy with every movement. he is a slow plodder. his jab sucks, it is "effective" only because he is just so god damn big. his head is way up high when he throws. he is a robot in the ring. no fluidity. and non-black fighters can be fluid, but both the klits don't have this at all. at all. zero.
yea, buddy baer and primo carnera were better athletes and boxers than wlad haha, and it took louis 6 and 7 rounds to get the jobe done, against those slow, unskilled bums
Fighters with good movement and jabs such as Farr, Pastror, Schmeling, Conn, Walcott, and Charles either defeated Louis or made him look very bad. I think this is not a coincidence. Outside of the re-match with Schmeling, all of the above fights were 10 rounds or more. None of these guys were close to Wlad's size, and none of them had his power. None had Wlad's high guard either. In fact I could argue Wlad had a better chin than most of them too! In addition, none of these guys could clamp down as well on a smaller fighter via clinch on the inside. Louis was never dynamic with his feet nor did he have a bob and weave / slip and duck method to close the distance quickly. He had a measured approach that included a low guard, limited head movement, limited lateral movement, and was prone to knockdowns and being stunned. Defensively Louis was average at best. Could he really 1 ) Get past Wlad's jab, and 2 ) Catch up to him before he takes a pasting? Think about it... I think the answer to question number one is no. I think the answer to question number two is not on a consistent basis. Louis has a punchers' chance. But so does Wlad. Louis is not going to catch Wlad on the ropes, and flims show JL is painfully slow to change tactics. At this point, I favor Wlad in this one.
Which is why what matter most is critical objective thinking in the pick that combined styles, and tendencies. Tell me why you think so and so wins.
I completely agree ... many of the most spirited debates on this Forum stem from emotion over any sort of logic, giving mythical accomplishments to fan favorites that defy reason or any actual accomplishment ... I feel Louis has the skill set to take advantage of Wlad's limitations and would stop him ... I agree that Wlad could be difficult but feel Louis' explosive punching ability could do the trick ... I look at round three against Haye and feel Haye almost could have if he had a healthy foot and feel Louis was far more explosive ...
I think Louis stuggles to get past Wlad's jab, if he can regularly get inside he would KO Wlad and he could score a come from behind KO but Wlad can outbox and stop him too with his own power. I'm 50-50 on this
Wladamir Klitschko does not belong in the same sentence as Joe Louis! I am 25 years of age, so I'm not an Old Timer, but this is just ridiculous. Louis is probably up there now, thinking, I could do another "Bum of the Month" tour with these guys!
Louis would parry the jab and counter back like he did with Baer, then open up with combos when they started having an effect. KO in the 7th. Perhaps Wlad would last the distance or get a decision if he ran scared all night behind a left, but i'd say there's maybe a 30% chance of that happening.
Klitschko is a credit to the sport in one way, but Haye is right in saying that he is killing boxing. He's highly educated, eloquent, and he takes his sport seriously. He respects himself and others. But he has a serious problem. Behind closed doors, Manny Steward sees it and knows it and is on him about it. Some of it seeped through in the corner the other night. His problem is his mentality. Wlad Klitschko is a sportsman, not a fighter; there's a real difference there but that isn't the end of it. During those rare times that Haye decided to throw more than one much, Klitschko does what he has always done and to me it looks something like panic. I read too much out here about his "coordination" and his "mobility." I don't see much of either. The man is relatively coordinated and mobile as compared to other oversized men, but come on. I'd like to do a poll because I think it likely that those who celebrate Wlad's "talent" and "skill" are also big supporters of affirmative action. Let's not dumb down standards because heavyweights, generally speaking, can't fight. Oversized Wlad was getting good and tired early on. Was that because he's lugging around all that muscle or was it because of his anxiety? All he had to do to dispatch Haye to a sleepy hayloft was back him up to the ropes and lace him with 3 or 4 punch combination of the straight sort. That's it! But he didn't -because he's a naturally nervous about getting hurt or getting embarrassed. This man is celebrated as some kind of machine -but he's more human than half the posters on this site! I'll tell you something else as well -he has adopted a German quality that should be respected in venues other than the ring. That is, he is detail-oriented to the point of being a perfectionist. You heard Manny telling him to stop waiting until everything is perfect before throwing a punch. Louis would exploit that basic, safety-first style, as much as he would the anxiety behind it. He'd stop him. Wlad would fall apart under the skilled onslaught of a true technician and how soon would be decided by how often he skittered away and how much distance he could maintain between himself and his living nightmare.
Seriously, when people are talking about his amazing mobility/coordination and defensive skill and such... Don't see it. I see the same lumbering lack of fluidity that all superheavies have. Lewis and Wlad suffer from it less but that lack of dexterity is still there. I don't see him putting his hands together in terms of combinations very well apart from the basics, i don't see him stick and moving fluidly... He leans back well like Vitali using his height to avoid head punches, but leaves his body open. He doesn't body punch or infight at all. The only way he can even be called a technician is if you acknowledge that his size is a huge limiting factor. agreed 100% on the mentality thing, Stoney. It's why i can never favor Wlad over a real bully or killer top level heavy. That nervous look on his face is a constant whenever he's coming under fire.
