Since there are 2 threads about the dirtiest fighters ever I thought for a while that finding the legit players is the harder task , so , who are/were the most rule obeying fighters ?
All time I'd say they were :
    James Toney
    Montell Griffin
    Julian Jackson
    Arnold Cream
    Corrie Sanders
    Chris Byrd
    Marlon Starling
    Aaron Davis
    Jose Luis Lopez
    Ronald Wright
    Ezzard Charles
Walker Smith Jr. (not that much to his credit given his big physical advantages over his opponents)
    Thomas Hearns (see W.S.Jr. case)
    Antonio Tarver
    Glen Johnson

    today i suppose :
    Chad Dawson
    Manny Pacquiao
    Juan Manuel Marquez
    Antonio Tarver
    Glen Johnson

Joe Louis was the cleanest of the clean.

Louis and Arguello were pretty legit. For his era, Joe Gans seems to be pretty clean.

Joe Gans was praised many-many times for helping his opponents up if they slipped, and fighting cleanly in general.

Arguello was in a class with Louis in that he didn't need to ever be dirty.

Don't know about Arguello , but I remember watching Louis hitting Buddy Baer after the bell and I was not even interested in Louis or keen on learning much about him. I am pretty sure there is more to be told about Louis' fouling.
For example Maufaufau Sita is comparable with Louis which is why I purposefully did not mention him here : he hit Rahman after the bell and Moorer while he was already down.
McCall was dirty with Diaz but quite clean otherwise .

Tell that to Max Schmeling's kidneys.

That almost has as much to do with Schmeling positioning his body against the ropes as it does to Louis doing the dirty.

I guess Louis was supposed to send Schmeling an engraved letter of intent politely informing him of his intentions.

Well, I've watched recently two fights with Toney and Montell managed to throw some light rabbit punches, hit after break and after the bell. Didn't watched all his fights though

Personally I count kidney punches and behind the ear shots of fighters turning away as pretty much legal

What does it matter. It´s about winning and you do everything you can to do so and look to have every advantage possible. If you can get away with fouling so be it.

So, hitting on the spine is legal?
