The punch was ruled to be legal at the time.

Not a chance. Holding behind the head was his infighting bread and butter and he was never penalized with any frequency for it.

When he fought Agapito Sanchez Manny Pacquiao got headbutted, elbow, hit on the break, hit after the bell and took about a dozen full blooded, brutal low blows for six rounds.

He was frustrated almost to the brink of tears but he completely refused to retaliate even though Freddy was pleading with him to foul back. That fight showed a lot of character if not much in the way of ring intelligence. Not many people have seen his pre-Barrera fights.

in addition to holding behind the head while punching, stalling using the ref, whatever complicity he might have had with Dundee against Cooper or with NOI against Liston II, you can add holding the ropes while hitting as a favorite tactic.

Barely rabbit punches , more to the side of the head than to its rear part , 1 time in 24 rounds he did seem to forget about the bell but they were at the middle of an exchange . I watched these 2 yesterday for the 10th time or so . Griffin pushed Jones with his shoulder in close range but it should really be considered legit infighting (actually Montell tried to restore it to outfighting). I also watched Montell vs Tarver , Johnson and Michalczewski and he was quite a legit fighter

I think Ali was well aware of Dundee's tactics such as splitting his gloves vs Cooper , loosening the ropes vs Foreman and who knows what more.
Ali is a lock for top 20 dirtiest fighter of all time

..the louis punch to schmelling was clean and legal.
he did not hit walcott when he was down.
in his entire career he had one....ONE...warning from the ref and maybe the was round taken away...don't recall. that was when he hit schmeling low and max said "it was not deliberate....he was foggy by that time and didn't know what he was doing."
his punch to buddy baer was on its way when the bell rang.

the question mark after ezzard charles' name. gus lesnevich said ezzard was the cleanest fighter he ever fought. ezzard was an infighter and sometimes his legal blows were called low...his fight with paul andrews is an example. an infighter will have blows go a bit on the low side every now and then, but i don't think he ever hit low deliberately.

in walcott III referee zack clayton who was in on the fix actually called some of ezzard's blows to the breastbone low!!! and took away most of his body attack.

I not saying Marciano was a clean fighter, mister elbows and rabbit puncher here, but he didnt hit Walcott when he was down. Walcott was OUT, yes, but he was not down. Walcott;s knees didnt hit the ground yet. Walcott's fault though because he took so long going down lol.
