Cletus Seldin vs. Renald Garrido, 10 rounds @ welterweight

 

Round 1

Seldin is working the body early, throwing lead left hooks and corkscrewing the right into the near hip of the Frenchman. Light double-jabs up top by Seldin, with horse-blinders on, single-minded in his focus on the body, putting everything into those hooks on the far hip. Garrido is keeping a high tight guard, letting Seldin have what he wants downstairs, absorbing lots of hooks and hurling in lead overhand rights in counter, catching Seldin atop the crown repeatedly, bouncing his fists off the skull like a judges' gavel.

Neither man sits in his stool during the break after the first - not sure whose idea that was to decline it first, but it was obviously reciprocated by the opponent in a stubborn display of gamesmanship.

 

Round 2

Seldin is hooking inside and using the stiff forearms to ram into Garrido and set him up for more body shots. The ref warns Seldin for overusing them a bit, cautioning they aren't meant to be extra weapons for him. Seldin is throwing shoeshines while rapidly circling in narrow little spirals around Garrido. Big looping rights by Garrido chasing Seldin, attempting to locate him by pumping out a soft little scout jab. Short left hook up top by Seldin, doubled up. Hooking combo by Garrido. Seldin is falling in with a jab between the eyes and Garrido fights him off with a looping right on the temple.

The commentator is right - despite their deceptive respective KO percentages, it seems Garrido's power bothers Seldin a lot more than vice-versa (even though Seldin has won both rounds so far close but clear). Every time he throws Seldin backs up, whereas Seldin can't budge him.

 

Round 3

Garrido is just lapping up hooks as Seldin lobs them softly from both sides, taking lateral steps and swiveling each hip into his meaty arm punches. Garrido not even blinking. Garrido is answering with chopping rights and left hooks. Seldin mixing in uppercuts and shoeshining the body prior to climbing up top with his machete hack combos. Garrido answering him punch for punch in the pocket, not backing down. Seldin is rocked by a right hand above the ear as both are throwing a combination inside.

Round 4

Seldin is throwing 1-2s and stepping clockwise around Garrido, taking counter left upper-hooks into the gut and straight right hands on the face. Seldin looks a little gassed and is visibly reaction to all of Garrido's power shots now, and is cut by the eye. Garrido is growing in confidence, becoming ever more the aggressor. Every new exchange now initiated (and ended) by the visitor. Garrido is walking through Seldin's headhunting shoeshines and shoveling body shot combos. Seldin is ripped by chopping overhand rights one after the other. Garrido steadying himself with the occasional left hook on Seldin's cheek to hold firm in his balance, digging in and fortifying his position to land more solid right hands. Nice body work by Seldin near the end of the round. Uppercut on the chin by Seldin. HUGE right hand up top by Seldin. Garrido answers back with a chopping combo to back Seldin off!

Round 5

Seldin is unloading on Garrido from the bell, looking to assert himself and regain control, knowing he probably lost the fourth despite his own big efforts to counteract Garrido's surge. Seldin is using the jab to set up big crashing right hands over the top. Garrido is hanging in with him but can't match the firepower or the output on the body. Seldin switches to southpaw and has some success shooting 1-2s from the stance but momentarily appears to have hurt his hand. Time in and Seldin is drilling Garrido with heavy lead straight rights from orthodox. 1-2-3-4s from Seldin. Garrido is chopping down from on high with the right but his volume can't match Seldin's once the latter has worked up a lather and built up a head of steam.

Round 6

Seldin is throwing hooks and uppercuts galore, standing directly in front of Garrido. Seldin is baiting Garrido into nonstop exchanges. Garrido happy to oblige but getting out-thrown and out-landed. Seldin is doubling jabs and then doubling crosses behind them. Wide flapping hooks by both men, struggling to stand firm and not slide across the canvas as the soles of their shoes scuff from the force of their own momentum standing in and bombing away with hooks. Nice left uppercut on the throat by Garrido, drawing back and firing at a sharp incline while pivoting inward and dipping his entire upper body leftward. Garrido fighting incredibly hard but just outmatched in volume and power. Garrido tough as hell, no quit in him. Seldin is showing remarkable stamina to keep up this pace for so long, from bell to bell, constantly working either head or body, no let up.

Seldin finally takes a rest on the stool in his corner, between the 6th and 7th. Absolutely nuts that both went this long with that macho BS.

 

Round 7

Seldin is switching from orthodox to southpaw every half minute or so now. BIG right hands down the middle by Seldin. Lead hooks (left or right depending on stance) now flapped in by Seldin to set up shoeshines on the body and head and big straight rear-hand shots. Garrido is fending him off with overhand rights but they have less and less mustard on them. Garrido is getting his head dragged by Seldin's shots now while backpedaling away from them, taking a bit of the edge off but not avoiding them completely. Garrido putting his gloves up and blocking out what he can while loading up on overhand right counters but getting banged around the ring. Seldin determined and relentless, still putting in an insane pace for having already fought this hard (and padding out every second of every round with activity) for over six rounds already.

The doctors are called onto the ring apron before they start the eighth to check on Garrido. He waves them off, insisting he is fine and wants to continue. They flash a light in his eyes and shrug and decide to allow it.
