Cleveland Big Cat Williams 1960 vs Jerry Quarry 1969, who wins? Does the Big Cat kayo Jerry? Or does Quarry do a Sonny Liston to Williams?

I would love to respond Richard, but if I were to reply, I'd probably wind up assassinated.

Yes and no. While I do favor him I think, I think odds should be close. However, kind of like you, one of my biggest motivations for defending Williams is not because I side with him, so to speak, but just to balance out so many of the unreasonable people who think he was a bum and a pushover.

To me this is the level they should both be matched on. I think this is close to a 50/50 type of fight, forced to fall on one side or the other I would pick Quarry but not with the confidence to bet on this type of fight.

Quarry - he beat better fighters and he excelled against the type of fighter Williams was. To pick Williams - when stylistically he has a disadvantage in this bout and never came close to fighting the caliber of opponents Quarry has, is a reach.

This is a very close bout in my opinion. I'm going back and forth.

    Some things to consider:

Quarry on paper seems to have a stylistical edge.

Williams never fought anyone like Quarry.

Quarry never fought anyone with the combination of speed, reach, power, and boxing ability. While Shavers, Foster, and Lyle may have had one or more of these attributes, they didn't have it in spades like Williams did.

As much as people criticize Williams for his record against top heavyweights. He went 1-3-1 against the best men he faced in his prime (in my opinion 2-2-1) in Liston, Machen, and Terrell. I don't think Quarry replicates this. I think he loses to all of the above men. Hell he DID lose to a noticeably past it Machen while Williams drew with a peak one, in a bout most thought he won.

Quarry's vulnerability to cuts is something Williams could easily exploit, while Quarry doesn't really have the power to shut Williams' lights like Liston did.

Quarry had a much better record than Williams, then again Williams getting shot when he was on the verge of another title match, and starting to take on better opponents certainly doesn't help matters.

Gun to my head, I would pick Williams 51-49 based on the above cases I've laid out for both men. Just hope this thread is over by the time Klompton comes back or he'll be out for my head!
