People point to Bonavena’s resume, but he was in a much better era, in his prime, Williams only lost to Liston, did lose to Terrell, but also stopped him.
Williams was more polished, threw sophisticated combinations with speed, accuracy and set up punches well, I have him beating Bonavena on points, Bonavena, while has a good chin, is limited, Williams is very underrated, especially in his boxing ability, people seem to think he’s crude and limited also, but by the eye test, he just isn’t, can throw punches at distance, and can shorten them up and has brilliant punch selection in his combinations, which against a defensively limited fighter like Bonavena, would allow him to light him up at times, he’d outjab him on the outside and would beat him to the punch in general, and even in the trades due to his speed, the only concern is if he gasses, but if he gains Bonavena’s respect, which he would, he could easily keep the fight low volume.
Williams is one of the more underrated guys on this forum, mainly due to the fact he didn’t really beat anyone apart from Terrell, but he also didn’t lose to anyone other than Liston and also Terrell on points may I add, people question his durability, why? Because he got stopped by Liston? He got knocked out early on in his career, but he was like 20 years old.
