Then tragedy struck, on Nov 30 1964, Cleveland Big Cat Williams was shot by a Texas State Trooper, nixing the Terrell vs Williams third bout. Then on March 5 1965, Terrell defeated Eddie Machen on points.

Yes - Machen didn't really deserve a title shot at that point, but with Ali, Liston, Williams, Patterson, Chuvalo and Jones all eliminated for one reason or another, and Zora Folley having been widely outpointed by Terrell the previous year, there really wasn't anyone else.

To be fair can you blame him? With Patterson’s chin and style combined with Williams power, it would’ve been a violent clash!

It was ridiculous. Machen was quite clearly a shell of himself upon his return and had just come off a one-sided loss to Patterson. He in no way deserved a title shot. If anything Patterson should've gotten the shot.

I think Patterson can win by virtue of being the more skilled and talented of the two men. He had very fast hands and good ring savvy. Neither man had a very solid chin. I can see Cleveland scoring a knock down and hurting Floyd but i think Patterson comes on strong late for either a stoppage or decision.

    Patterson would poleaxe Williams.
