moorer was a sound boxer built up to heavyweight who at least paid his dues up until winning the title from an unbeaten champion. But thats it. ruddock was the guy who was KOd by dave jaco but became a scary dude after beating bonecrusher and dokes two guys who had already had their day. but that was it. who were the two respected guys who had had their day that cleveland williams knocked out?
I know, Williams didn't have those names on his record. Razor was just the one of more modern contenders that reminded me of Williams.
I have been in the loft and went through a lot of old magazines...boxing illustrated breifly had cleveland williams rated #8 in 1961! curent euro champ franco cavichi was rated through 55 and start of 1956 and was #10 in the ring ratings when ingo knocked him out. heinz nuehaus was rated as late as may 1956 also but was unrated when he faced ingo in 58. 32-1 curent britsh champ erskine was #10 in 58', he'd only ever lost to #4 valdes when ingo beat him.joe was still in the ratings until 1961'. dick richardson as euro champ made the fringe of the top ten from march 61' until he lost his title to ingo in 1962.
Should this even be a question? Williams would annihilate Ingo in 1 or 2 rounds. Williams was the only fighter who hurt a prime Liston(Ali baffled him and flurried him silly but didn't hurt Liston). Those who are picking Ingo are delusional. Williams was too big and powerful for Ingo. If Patterson(who did have some power)was able to KO Ingo twice imagine what happens when Williams lands those sledgehammer-like punches on Ingo. Lights out.
Williams didnt have that great of a chin himself, It would be who landed there best punchings would win this one. I dont see it going to round 3. 50 50 either way imo. I cant belive a lot of people are counting Johansson out when he ko Machen out cold, and hardly no one did that before. Johansson has the power to pull off a win over Williams. But at the same token Williams can take Ingo out too, who ever lands there power first should take it.
Obviously you cant entirely count out Williams but in order to asses his chances we must check to see if his world class power could actually knockout world class opponents. Williams was good value and gave one elite fighter a scare but that’s it, it is not what Ingo was capable of - he emphatically knocked out the two best heavyweights in the world in back to back fights when both were undefeated. You can surmise Williams was capable to equal this but there is no proof to back it up with. Having knockout power and being able to catch elite fighters with it is something that has to be proven. Even if a young fighter came along and banged out both Klitchkos back to back he couldn’t match Ingo since both have already been beaten. Patterson ruined a special fighter in the rematch - neither were the same yet Patterson went on to beat fighters like bonavenna, chuvalo possibly even ellis and quarry - several levels above big cat William’s best wins.
Thats just bull****, you believe everything you read ,dont you? "made sure he didnt fight a big hulking fighter again" hehehe hilarious:happy And he fought Sanders in 52 in the olympic final, using a strategy the most overhyped heavyweight made famous ten years later...
