I see this as similar to Louis/Max Baer. Louis timing Williams and nailing him with quick combos. Could Williams be competitive against the Brown Bomber?
Im sure if Williams had Liston as a reference, Max Baers camp would have strongly considered him for the position of spit bucket cleaner.....at least on a trial basis.
Another post that proves my point, Williams doesnt give Louis a good fight but Williams rocked Liston and wasnt bullied bc he was around the 210/215 mark that liston was? The hard reality is williams would be a very live opponent for Louis. One thing about Williams is he struggled with heavier guys, but Louis was 190/205 any which weight you like? And this could be a great fight. I'll say Louis just cause and avoid more points where i have to justify...lol I'll go louis by 10th rnd K.O
Cleveland Williams was much better than Max Baer. Put Williams in Baer's era and he would be a legend today.
I think Louis would've dispatched him by five due to the fact he was quicker and more accurate and better counter puncher than Liston. Now Max Baer vs Williams may go 10.
It is true that Liston held Williams in very high esteem, but that is symptomatic of the problem with Williams. His reputation relies too heavily on the esteem of his peers, as opposed to results obtained in the ring. Max Baer for all that he disappoints, does have a lot of quality wins on his resume.
Oh yeah, sure, in dumb modernist world. Where only 5 boxers existed in the past. Max Baer, Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey, some German guy, a giant oaf, A fat drunk, and a bunch of bums. Right? Did I capture the shallow mentality properly?
Is Cleveland Williams even better than Roscoe Toles? Who is Roscoe Toles you may ask? Exactly. Fall back.
