Williams was a big puncher who had the power to KO Moorer but Moorer was a southpaw with the power to stop Williams. Personally, I back Moorer but not without hesitation.
I think it’s possible that Michael Moorer might have been a more well rounded fighter. But this would be an exciting scrap
Think he did, I remember it was a decent scrap. The Cooper fight was one of the best of the early 90 s as well.
He hit the deck quite a bit in fights but only stayed down against Tua and Foreman. He practically came back from the dead to beat Bert Cooper and Holyfield dropped him multiple times in their second fight. One thing that is not discussed enough about Moorer is his will and heart to battle when hurt. Weird considering how many times he showed up out of shape for fights or seemed lackadaisical when winning.
I mean, Cleveland is a live wire in this fight. Whether you favor him to win or not. My only question is how would he deal with a skilled southpaw that can crack.
Gun to my head I'll tentatively go with Moorer despite his chin. Williams never fought a southpaw to my knowledge, so he would be fairly perplexed. But judging by the Machen and Terrell bouts, he was a decent adapter and could very well figure Moorer out if he's not knocked out first.
Was just gonna make this thread, but thought I may as well bump this as it wasn’t too long ago to warrant a new thread. It’s a dangerous fight for Moorer, one I’d favour him in, but I feel it’s more dangerous for him than the Lyle fight, even though I’d pick Lyle over Williams. Moorer would most likely box Williams, but only trade when he has to, the reason it’s more dangerous is because Williams is more explosive than Lyle and can close the distance quicker, Moorer would see most of it coming against Lyle, Williams can take you off guard with explosive, unorthodox leads and even counters to an extent. Moorer might have to do more fighting here than against Lyle because Williams is better at closing the ring off and has quicker feet. I feel the tighter technique and better straight punches would eventually start beating Williams to the punch and Moorer would take it, on points or late stoppage.
He didn’t go to a knee, but Stewart froze him with a 1-2 and he literally bent over at the waist because he was stunned, which resulted in Stewart missing a bunch of follow up punches, but then after a few seconds Moorer was back slugging. Moorer - Stewart is a highly overlooked fight, not quite the scrap that the Cooper fight was, but it’s still very entertaining. After he almost knocked out Stewart in the first round, Stewart basically wins round two and three and is landing some heavy shots in the fourth. Moorer then literally slices him open, cuts him severely, and busts him up with some uppercuts and drops him again. Alex gets right to his feet but he’s bleeding over both eyes so the fight is called. Fun fun fun scrap. Moorer vs Williams is an interesting proposition because there were definitely two different versions of Michael Moorer at heavyweight. The first one that came up with Emmanuel Stewart was going toe to toe and slugging guys out like a maniac. Once he switched to Teddy Atlas, he seemed to work behind his jab and fight more patiently. The more reckless wild one would have a chance of getting caught by Williams and maybe stopped, but I still will favor Moorer (either version) to beat Williams.
