Cleveland Williams vs Ron Lyle

Didn't Ron Lyle lose to Jerry Quarry in Feb 1973? And wasn't Earnie iced in round 1 against Quarry on Dec 14 1973? I think that Lyle's claim to instant fame came on Jan 24 1976 when he decked an ego deflated post Zaire George Foreman and later succumbed to Foreman because of exhaustion.

 

Like I said, look at the names Bonavena and Ellis were barely scraping by on technicalities and drawing with at the time of their career.

Terrell on the other hand was 23 years old, had been pro for 5 years, never knocked out, and hadn't lost in two years. An SD to former contender Bethea. Within a year he'd go on to beat Williams and Folley back to back.

On the other hand you also think a 20 year old Williams who'd been pro for 2 years, wasn't green when he lost to Satterfield. Another example of your laughable double stanards.

Also, Williams' draw with Machen is better than anything Lyle could've mustered up against him based on his dreadful performances against Young, winning a round in 2 fights. He would've been equally befuddled against Machen, this time he doesn't go the distance. Unlike Young Machen had a decent punch.

 

Not sure who wins. This would be a very entertaining fight though.

Haha. Def. a prison vibe, Williams perhaps looking the least homicidal. The biggest and the best recruited and being checked up for the prison football team…like The Longest Yard. The old doc might wanna be checking his own heart.

I’m kinda 50/50 on it atm, Swag - but I haven’t seen through my mental processing of the fight - which is why I copped out on a pick in the first instance.

In picking Lyle, I don’t know if some people have pivoted on Williams’ perceived, relative lack of durability as a defining feature.

Per our previous discussions, you and I give Williams that much more credit (justifiably imo) for his prime, unimpaired durability.

I think it could be a significant err in judgment to think Williams could be tipped over as easily as some believe.

Certainly, I don’t see Lyle being able to see Cleve off as emphatically as Liston did - Liston obviously being that much more superior to Lyle.

At best, I would say Williams’ boxing skills were at least on par with Lyle’s. I don’t know that Williams would be looking to outbox Lyle over the long haul though.

My guess is that Cleve brings the heat straight out of the gates as he did with Sonny.

Even with his own great chin, Liston said Williams was close to having him out. Just a quote which can be taken any which way but one that I personally believe, as literally expressed.

Basically, I see a barn burner, Cleve’s aggression being met in kind by Lyle (ala vs Shavers and Foreman).

I def. don’t preclude Williams having the sufficient combination of size, speed, power and skill to hurt Lyle more effectively than Shavers did, or even Foreman who ultimately batted down a tired Lyle.

Lyle has his own power that could hurt Williams (that’s the version of Lyle in beast mode I’m talking about) but again, I don’t think Cleve folds under such duress as easily as some might think.

So, atm, it’s a pick’em fight for me.

A few $$$, however, could easily tip me over to Team Williams. I’m a fair man but also very corruptible.

Swag is a scary fella, you don’t want to incur his wrath. Best I could do while remaining somewhat true to myself was to go 50/50.

He’s promised a cheque I see, so tentatively I will select Williams. Between you and I, his last cheque bounced.

I know you explained that the last chq bounced because you forgot to account for monies being transferred out to JT relating to some other “agreement”.

Anyway, Cleve is pencilled in - when the money is good, I will over write and select him with a permanent marker.

 

I'm not even game to comment. I don't even want to assess Lyles chances as i know the fate that will await, if i don't sate.
