    PART ONE. VOICES FROM BEYOND.
    Associated Press:

"Cleveland Williams of Tampa, Fla., called off his heavyweight fight with Welshman Dick Richardson tonight because of a "message from beyond". It was to have been held in the gym over the local chamber of horror waxworks. Boxing Board of Control officials went to Williams' hotel. They found him in bed. He complained of a cold. Four doctors were called. All pronounced the big American fit to fight. Then Boxing Board secretary Terry Waltham arrived from London.

Behind closed doors he had a long talk with Williams. When he came out he said: 'It is all a mysterious affar. Williams put his right hand to his head, rolled his eyes upwards and said, "i've got a message from the beyond. I'm not well enough to fight"'.

The fight was not to be.

    PART TWO. WTF.
"Proffessional HW fighter Cleveland Williams fought a couple of fast rounds with his girl friend, it was learned on Tuesday, but he used a meat cleaver instead of his fists. The firlfriend, Miss Gwendolyn Scott, ended up in hospital with head and back wounds. The fracas came to light when Williams, 26, jogged into the police station whilst doing roadwork and asked for the meat cleaver back.

He wore a heavy wool jacket, heavy trousers and combat boots. He told officers he and the girl friend had an argument July 20 and she hit him with the cleaver. He grabbed it from her and floored her. She refused to file charges.

"I was doing some roadwork," said Williams "and I thought about getting the meat cleaver back. It was a borrowed meat cleaver and the lady wants i back."

Police gave him the meat cleaver."

Does anybody know why he got shot by that police officer?

It is often portrayed as the officer being trigger happy but this makes me wonder.

Good to know they had their Oliver McCall's and Ike Ibeabuchi's back in that era too.

    Negative.

It's actually lifted from an article describing how he was being widely ducked by the top men right after Ali came to the title.

When was that written? He was nut case.

Want to look into a real head case? Club fighter Charlie "Devil" Green. Bizarre behavior, suicide attempts in public, hanging off rooftops, drugs, street fights, pulling out of bouts--and all that was on his good days.

The last line kills me. I wonder how much roadwork he was doing afterward with the meat cleaver with him :rofl:lol:

It seems that most of the HW's of that era were off their rocker or at least met mysterious ends

Eddie Machen had heavy battles with depression that probably resulted in his death. Folley died in a "swimming pool" accident in the middle of the night but there are witnesses from what I've read that have reported to have seen mysterious men walking around the hotel pool around the same time. I love Sonny too but the guy was strange.

No, the best bit: "Police gave him the meat cleaver."

That should be the first ****ing paragraph of the first page in the first chapter of The Police Manual. "Don't give geezers like this one back their meat cleavers. Not even if they're borrowed."

    Brilliant stuff, McGrain.
