The "modern era" is from the 1950's onwards.

And I am talking about pure ring smarts... not folks who were secretly rocket scientists or anything...

So for example, the ability to assess the correct opposition (perhaps known as "cherrypicking" opponents). The ability to strategically plan for the upcoming fights. To devise the best traps etc.

Which fighter of the modern era did all of this best?

--Of particular interest to me are fighters who were able to use their ring smarts as a counterbalance to fundemental deficiencies e.g. lack of power.--

arguello seems to be a pretty clever boxer to me. he studies his opponents and knows how to beat them. any boxer who would adjust a game plan in a fight without having his corner telling him what to do.

JMM. He has zero advantages over Pac yet happens to make him look foolish most of the time they fight. Imagine what he would do if he had a little more speed or power. It would be scary

All good names..I got to go with Loche though, he looked so unassuming but developed a style that was so hard to contend with.

Ottke, though not it any of these guys league, deserves a mention. He basically did what he had to, to win. He made a mint with a boring style and if you actually to watch his career (its hard to stomach it by try it once), majority of them are not controversial, far from it usually.
He was a decent fighter but his place in his history is a bit of an overachievment thanks to smart management and smart boxing.

Bernard Hopkins is a smart fighter but not nearly the smartest. Just think back to the 1st Taylor fight regardless of how you scored the fight everyone knows Hopkins didnt even start throwing more then 10 punches a round until round 7 he was basically allowing Taylor to steal rounds on sheer activity. What does Hopkins do in the rematch to fix that ? Nothing he fought the same exact fight not starting until about round 7.

He has many advantages over Pac, granted Pac has some over him also. Which is why ehrn they fight it will always be close

jmm's style is a huge advantage over pac. his speed and power is also good, not up to pac's level but it's close. stamina is even.

The man in my avatar. Nicolino Locche. He wasn't clever at "hand-picking" opponents though. He fought who ever they put in front of him.

Yea I'm serious. What advantage does he hold? Speed? Power? Youth? Stamina?
The only possible one is ring intelligence
