Where did I say that he could get an occupation that was remuneratively better than boxing? I didn't. But he clearly has other options.
Media work on top of whatever else he wants to do but don't think he'll quit like that. As others have suggested change trainer, promoter and go back to square one. He's talented enough to regain one of the titles then retire.
Bunce said on twitter to a fan asking about the Clev fight. "Got caught, never recovered" I know twitter is a 90 character setting, but THAT is his analysis?
Hows that move to heavyweight looking...... Not a dig at Nathan, just seems a little lost and undervalued with his dad training him as well. Not sure its the best idea. Hes a fantastic fighter and i hope he continues. Kovalev is clearly a special talent.
He isn't retiring. He'll have plenty of options. Enzo fight does OK and would pay a reasonable amount. Bellew rematch down the line, potentially (albeit a big if) for a belt, plus any other amount of up and coming fighters who would want an ex-champ on their record. Clev is obviously upset, but his career is FAR from over. Forget the degree nonsense. it's a 2:2 in maths, which while it's no easy thing, he's not exactly rain man.
He won't retire... He's angry and upset that he lost and in a bad place. He can recover from the loss and win a belt again. Kovalev is a beast, Clev is young and was there or thereabouts in terms of world level, but wasn't good enough on the night. Personally I think he needs a proper trainer who can teach him some cuter skills, particularly defensively. He's done bloody well considering who he has been trained by... This shows you need much more than quick hands and a great engine to succeed at the highest level. And to those saying boxing will pay more, it depends what he does. Plus you have to consider you can't box until you're 60, so unless you're in big fights raking it in it isn't going to set you up for life... And those knocking a 2.2 in maths, sure it isn't that great but considering the amount of Uni he must've missed due to training/fights it's a bit more excusable... I wish him luck in whatever he does, but hope he gives it another crack...
Yea, the lesson out of this is that his Dad has got to go. He needs a coach who can actually teach him boxing? He looked a great prospect way back. He seems to actually have regressed in terms of his ring generalship and defence
Wasent there talk of him linking up with Freddie roach last year? Not sure how that would work out stylistically but roach is an upgrade on vince.
I hate to put the foot in as I picked him based on his cliams pre-fight, but it is clear he is not 100% focused on boxing using those tactics Saturday night. What on earth was he thinking?
What tactics? Cleverly has always stood and traded with guys. People were going on before the fight that clev had morphed into some sort of light heavy ricardo lopez
The "We know Nathan has a granite chin" made me laugh. He hasn't really fought anyone to test his chin bar Murat. He won't retire- he'll fight Enzo next, beat him and all will be well on Planet Cleverly.
Couple of things. I thought the crowd were dreadful Saturday, they looked like divs giving abuse to Kovalev. Burns in Scotland and Froch in London were like 100 times better fans than the Cardiff ones. Roach wanted to train Clev, why not drop to 168 with him?
