Cleverly considering retirement

This is wrong. He needs to work on a few things in the gym, but he can come back better.

 

I switched off just after that. His style is exactly what Kovalev shines against. He doesn't have the tools to beat Kovalev. I thought Cleverly was getting outworked, perhaps he won one round. He can be champion again? (He would still be WBO world champion if he had not got himself into that fight) It was pointless fighting Kovalev when he had no chance of winning, giving up the WBO title. Why come back after that? He needs to find it in himself to admit it was the wrong move to fight Kovalev. How is he so sure that he will be a champion again? He still doesn't realise he is knowhere near as good as Kovalev. The small gloves where blamed (Kovalev punches hard with them apparently), the hard shot on the side of the head. Why the excuses? He lost to the better man, a champion who looks awesome. He's even questioning what would have happened if Kovalev did not land that shot?

There's no need for excuses, he fought against a really solid dangerous opponent and lost. (a lot of people knew as soon as the fight was signed that Cleverly was doomed)

It's the failure to accept that he is not as good as he thinks is the problem. (He is very good, he's just not up there with the very best, and we know the gulf there can be huge)

I still don't know why he gave up the WBO title so easy, I'd have kept it for a couple of years and got out undefeated and with the money. (without going anywhere near Kovalev) It's ok being second best to the likes of Kovalev.

 

clev was good for boxing forums,he brought a lot of unknowns for several years. now that we know how good he is,he can just fall in the ranks were he really belongs and we can discuss real champions.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda...

Personally I've far more respect for someone who wants to fight the very best and loses, than someone who refuses to test themselves at the highest level just to remain 'undefeated'.

The loss, in time, will be the making of him.

 

This IS Boxing and the Boxing Boards SHOULD Make the fights.

beginning with;

National contention fights,
National title fights,
International contention elimination matches
and World Title fights

ALL Should be made by the Boxing Boards!!!

 

Credit to Cleverly for taking the fight,but apart from Bellew,I think it was a step up of Tony Thompson proportions.This Kovalev is as,expected,a wrecking ball.Unless Ward moves up,can't see anybody to bother him,although Stevenson would be a very interesting match if Tony doesn't beat him.As for Nathan,would he get away with just removing one leg to make super middle?If he wants,he can still be a force.But he shouldn't,and won't ,go near this guy again.

 

I think he IS a top level fighter.Just ran into somebody nobody will go near in twelve months time IMO

 

There's that unfortunate view of if it's not broke don't fix it. When you're looking and feeling good why would you need to box smart / change trainers / live fresher etc.

Life kicks hard sometimes and then you wake up.

 

I wouldn't normally say this, but I think Cleverly should retire.

He has better prospects than most other boxers. The fact his initial reaction was that he wants to retire tells me he doesn't have the indefatigible spirit one needs to get to the top. And why do fans only find it acceptable for a fighter to retire when has actually gained neurological damage? Boxing fans are ridiculous beings. Truly. Cleverly should should go find a good high paying career and call it a day.

 

This makes a lot of sense to me.Cleverly beat some good men,especially Bellew,though I think he was ever so slightly flattered by that decision.But Hamed beat better men and jacked in after the Barrera thrashing.Outside the ring I believe he has far more potential.Surely he could use his Maths degree or branch out into sports teaching,or both?Although I think his title was somewhat handed to him I still think he can be a top ten light heavy.Just came across a beast who I think will be avoided for the next 2 or 3 years until age gets to him and a young hungry lad beats him finally.As for Nathan,as you say,he has options.

 

Is it true that he started out as a welterweight? If so, then why the f*ck move up to LWH
