But it would be shame shame to see him retire. He's a good fighter who should have been gradually brought along to world level rather than taking on soft opposition followed by the huge step up he took instead.

 

You couldn't of got a fighter who was brought on more gradually. He won a world title, he had to step up some time and he was nearly 27, smack bang in his prime years. If he wasn't ready then he was never going to be ready. Also lets wait out on Kovalev to see just how good the guy is, he could well be exposed to be off true world class level in the future.

Clevs just wasn't as good as he thought he was, no shame in that the vast majority of fighters go through that process.

Don't think he should retire either, but as most suspected he was definitely not operating at world level even though he did have a strap.

 

I'd be shocked if he retired but this is a reflection of where his head is and how hard he's taking the defeat.

Frank is probably already working on matching him up with Enzo as a money-making comeback fight then he can try and make another run. The good news for him is that there aren't many guys who hit like Kovalev.

 

Exactly. There's been a lot of things written about Cleverly being protected and then thrown in at the deep end, but his career progression followed the tried and trusted path for British fighters:

British/Commonwealth title level
European title level
WBO title level

His career stalled when he won a vacant interim title, which can often give the sense of being an elite fighter without actually having the achievements to match. Ultimately though, to be regarded as a genuine world champion you need to step up and beat the best guys in your division.

Some fighters can make the step up, but others fall short. The only way you ever find out is in the ring.

 

I think he should man up and go for a comeback. He got beaten by a truly devastating boxer. It does not mean there's nothing more Cleverly can do in boxing, as long as he stays away from Kovalev And GGG and Ward After all - he won't be picking nano physics or brain surgery tomorrow, will he. I reckon there are still a few paychecks he could cash in the next years, while he considers his long-term future. Fighting Enzo is one of these.

 

I use to be a big fan of Clev up until the Bellew match, became more of a fan of Bellew after seeing how arrogant Cleverly was but always said that he could use a better trainer than his father.

I fail to see why Cleverly hasnt signed up with Gary Lockett who has shown a lot of promise in aiding Maccarinelli to beating Ovil Mckenzie, something I dont think he would have been able to do otherwise aswell as Gavin Rees.

Lockett in my opinion is much more qualified, he shows a good knowledge of the sport aswell as knowing what to say when his fighter is in trouble between rounds. Hell even if Clev signed up with the Gallgher gym it would be a massive improvement or dare i say it goes to the Dark Lord Adam Booth

 

dunno mate, that ***get Hopkins can't take a punch and Kovalev already killed some guy in the ring. Kovalev should not go after Bernard ***gins or he'll end up on the electric chair as a serial killer:deal

 

Some of the things he's said suggest his heart was taken out of competing. Getting beat up has likely badly affected his confidence and he might just get worse from here, so he probably would be better off giving up. He's apparently fairly bright outside the ring, but he has horrible defence and no boxing smarts, so this probably isn't the sport for him...

It would be a huge ****ing disappointment if he did, there is still alot he can accomplish.
