I could tell from the first couple of minutes that Karpency was going to last the distance. Cleverly is a decent boxer, but where is the excitement? Ricky Burns isn't a huge puncher, but somehow his fights are more interesting and his opposition has been much higher than Cleverly's. He's respected for stepping up and delivering.

This is the WBO world championship right? Things have slipped in the division, Dariusz Michalczewski would have hammered everyone in the current top ten, probably knocking out 9/10 of them.

I can seriously see Enzo Mac giving Cleverly fit's if that fight comes off.

    What a waste.Even the American TV(Epix) called it a sparring session.Terrible.

  4. According to ******, the whole point of selecting Karpency was because it would attract US television.

Surely they'd have been better getting someone that would come to win, even if he was banged out early. At least makes Cleverly look good. When he really isn't.

Workrate and chin aside, he's pretty average imo.

Well what the **** is average?

He was British, Commonwealth, Euro and now WBO champion.

There are so many konw-it-alls on here (not referring to any particular individual) that detract from certain fighters with noreal reason.

Bottom line - in all areas of boxing, Nathan Cleverly is well above average.

I disagree, if you take away Cleverly's workrate and chin and he's left with just boxing fundamentals, he would not have reached the levels he has, his trainer is his Dad Vince ffs.

the fight was made, according to Cleverly purely because of economic reasons

He might not have reached world level but he would still be well above "average".

There are many, many pundits and commentators e.g. Paul Smith is the latest who say that Clev relies too much on his chin/getting into a tear up etc. They all suggest he has the skills required not to do that.

If he didn't have the chin he had, he would use he boxing skills more and would still be way, way above "average".

Maybe not a world champion, but why should we shoot him down just because he has a very good workrate and a seemingly strong chin?

I can see your point, Im yet to see Cleverly use his Boxing skills though, Bellew was boxing Cleverly's ears off in the first half of their fight, again Cleverly's work rate (which is world class) got him back in the fight and got him the nod of the judges, if he didn't have that extra gear he would have lost?

If he didn't have that extra gear, he'd be a completely different fighter imo. Either way he is far better than average. ;)

He gets stick for his weak reign so far but he is still a very good fighter and he is YOUNG - this is often forgotten. I don;t see what there is to hate - traditional route to the title, likes to trade, has skills doesn't use them, intelligent guy.

He should be the one in the news not Stella Chisora.

  14. If you want to call yourself a world champion, fight world class fighters.

Cleverly is a good fighter, but until he fires his old man and hires a proper boxing coach he won't improve.

He will improve because he is gaining experience. He might not improve at the rate some fighters do with a super American trainer a la Khan/Roach, but he will improve.
