It seems like the Lonsdale belt still has the lure of young boxers these days with Cleverly stating that he wants to defend it 3 times before moving on to European level. This is nice to hear. Nice to see a young boxer intent on walking properly before he can run. "I always wanted to follow the traditional route of winning British, Commonwealth, European and world titles. "I'm halfway there having won British and Commonwealth, but I don't mind hanging around at this level for a little while if it means I can get a Lonsdale belt outright. "It would mean so much to me to get the British title for keeps. "When I beat McIntosh it was a special feeling and I don't think the British title has left my side since. "I even sleep with it under my pillow and I can't contemplate the thought of giving it back if I move on to the European or world stage."
I didn't like all the talk of him possibly getting a title shot in the not-too-distant-future recently anyway. I'd like to see him have a few more fights before he steps up to the world level. Good on Cleverly anyway, to own that belt outright must be quite humbling:good.
I think he may as well do it, he isn't ready for world honours at this stage. He should have gone straight for it after beating Oakey - or even in that fight rather than the two African joke opponents. IMO he is only WBO level anyway, not potentially true world class. Good luck to the kid though..... good to see fighters wanting to win it outright.
Looking at the rankings hopefully he can fight Courtney Fry. Aside from that I don't know who the hell they are going to drag out. If Clinton Woods loses to Cloud that would be a great fight for Cleverly to gauge himself, but I'd think Woods would retire rather than continue.
Yeh, I think a fight with Fry and maybe a rematch with a fitter Oakey with more time to train would give him the belt and help him develop further. However as much as I like Cleverly I would not let him anywhere near Euro champ Braehmer yet he's a bit of a beat, hopefully the belt will be vacant by then. I cant see Woods winning the belt again but if he should I wonder if they will try to make the fight, sure Woods will retire if he loses also.
Good to hear, he is young and has time on his hands. However domestically our light heavyweight division isnt very good.
Sounds good to me. He is only 22. He has the C'Wealth and now the British. No reason he can't have 3 good defences over the next year and then move on to the European at 23.
i think magee is due a euro title shot at super middle, dont think he struggles at the weight either.
I'm sure this has been answered before, but if he makes, say, one defence then relinquishes the belt how many title fightrs would he have to win in the future?
