It's CERTAINLY a cherry-picked comment from me about Charles.

How the hell did I get picked out of the barrel?

If I recall, since you didn't repost the clip, I was commenting the brief clip you posted marveling at Marciano's skills. And I simply pointed out Charles wasn't doing much to stop him.

How that turned into me saying Ezzard Charles was a fighter totally lacking in defensive skills, I have no idea.

And I liked your black and white version of Klitschko-Sanders fight. But my first reaction was there are about 20 times as many punches thrown in that brief clip you posted compared to clips of guys like Jim Jeffries recorded on grainy film like that.

From Jeffries, it was like ONE PUNCH, WALK AROUND THE RING IN A CLINCH FOR A WHILE, TWO PUNCHES, WALK AROUND IN A CLINCH FOR A WHILE.

Speaking for myself only, I've never watched a clip of any fighter from the past HOPING IT SUCKED. Or HOPING it was dull as hell. Or HOPING the fighters looked BAD. Just like I don't look forward to fights on any given weekend hoping they bore me to death or that the fighters aren't skilled.

But if a fight sucks, then it sucks. (And before you have a stroke, Marciano-Charles I and II didn't suck.)

You can claim someone is BIASED against this era or that era, but if it's a good fight it's a good fight, regardless of the era or the boxers. I'd rather watch a replay of Brewster-Liakhovich (neither of whom is considered heavyweight champ worthy of the Hall of Fame), then many fights featuring bigger names. If it's a good fight, I'm all for it.

And when Marciano was knocking out Charles, from what I recall of what you posted, Charles wasn't doing a whole helluva lot to stop him. That's all I was trying to say.

You were raving about Marciano, I was saying yes, but look at Charles, he's not doing what he's supposed to do in that situation.

It wasn't some sweeping condemnation of fighters from an era.

And I think you actually know that.

So I don't know what the hell this was all about, frankly.

But I'm not going to get into an argument about it. Because I only looked at this thread after it showed someone was replying to my "comments" in it, and I never even looked at this thread until now, let alone commented in it.

It was an example that I remembered.

I genuinely thought that you were talking about Ezzard in general, and not just an isolated incident.

But to be fair, if you reread your posts, it hard not to see it that way. You accuse Charles of having no defense or boxing basics. How do you account for that? Did he have amnesia?

I think you are FAR more overzealous in painting Charles as a boxing basic-less fighter, than I am in painting Marciano an awesome attacker. Not I think, I know.

    I didn’t make that Sanders/Vitali Clip.
If I did, I would have done it differently.

So have you ever actually counted the punches from past fights, and compared them to modern numbers, or are you just going off some feeling?

Combo punching from that era is so easy to miss. Sometime it might look like a push, or just a random bunch of movement that your mind can’t sort.

It’s not until you have crisp footage, that you can START to see this stuff.

How many punches do you think you would’ve counted here if the footage was in the typical Jeffries-like cigar box state? 1? 0?

Gans was a phenom. Everything I see of him raises my opinion of him. Offensively and defensively, such a tremendously skilled fighter.

Which is why isolating a clip to make any boxer look bad is a terrible practice. Remember, my posts are satire, and are in fact aimed at tackling this very issue.

    You know what it’s like?
It’s like looking at someone’s corpse to analyze how rich of a life they lived. How can you judge what one is capable of simply by showing them at their worst? It makes no sense, but ideology makes people do things.

I love analysis by GIFF. It's so enlightening.

Sanders look exactly like a 38 year old guy who knows his window of opportunity had just opened, would shut again soon, never to re-open. He's closing the gap and landing punches against a stunned foe. Not too bad for big guy who is far over the hill in physical terms.

Far more enlightening than the observations/analyses provided by many here.

It seems like if Max Baer eats a jab, he's a crude buffoon. Provided context is met with eye rolls.
But if Sander gallops like a wounded rhino, there is reason A, B, and C to justify it. We should have equal tolerance for technical limitations across all eras.

But as this board has illustrated to me time and time again, we do not.

Somehow, you seem to be confused about what's going on here. People don't think that Baer was crude and unskilled because of a streamable--they think this because of Baer's overall body of work. Because of what he did round after round, fight after fight. He regularly lunged and threw wild, wide punches. He was extremely hittable and regularly ate punches that we would expect skilled fighters to avoid (at times failing to react to naked incoming punches until it was too late, due to his poor reflexes). His jab was mostly a complete non-factor, as he almost never seemed able or wiling to use it to control distance or set up his offense. It's not surprising that he had poor and limited schooling as a fighter, and no amateur pedigree. He thrived nonetheless because he was blessed with excellent punching power and a great chin, and fought in what is widely considered to be one of the weakest heavyweight eras of all time.

For the umpth time, modern fighters can show the same amount of technical negligence you’re interpreting from Baer.

Corrie Sanders full body of work is no more impressive from a technical standpoint.

Deontay Wilders full body of work is no more impressive from a technical standpoint.

George Foreman’s full body of work is no more impressive from a technical standpoint.

There is no separation between boxing skill from eras, generally speaking. Which is whats really fueling this argument.

You used a Streamable to illustrate your point, and I did the same. If you want to do a fuller comparison, what can we do? Perhaps you do a 5 minute video of Baers technical negligence, and I’ll do the same for Sanders or Foreman, and then we can see what we come up with? I might be up for that.
