I don’t think any real boxing fan disagrees with the fact that Ali hit him with a decent shot. What we disagree with is that the shot was enough to knock out a man who didn’t go down when police used to beat on him with night sticks and batons. Sonny Liston had his jaw broken by Cleveland Big cat Williams and still fought through to ko Williams. This fight was a fix. Full Stop.

Liston's neck jerked and the entire half of Liston's upper back quivered when the punch landed. He was coming in and Ali put the extra twist in the punch at just the instant Liston came into perfect range. Ali's feet were perfectly set for maximum leverage. It was a hell of punch in my estimation. I just don't see how anyone looking at the clip at the beginning of this thread can deny the evidence on the screen. As for Patterson and D'Amato's comments, Patterson and D'Amato were likely sitting near one another. They probably had the same vantage point and they both say it was a legitimate punch.

I agree with the posters here who point out that Liston had a right to hear the count from the referee. The count should not have started until Ali went to a neutral corner which he never did. Walcott should have allowed the fight to continue when Sonny arose. Fleischer had no right to tell Walcott that the fight was over.

I have always believed ever since watching the fight on TV the week after the fight that the claims Sonny threw the fight were nonsense. The footage I have just seen posted on this thread just reinforces my opinion all the more.

Marty Marshall broke his jaw earlier in his career.
Williams broke his nose.

Immediately after he went to his corner Ali said to his brother, "he laid down".

Actually Ali was off balance when he threw the right hand and it was commented on at the time.Liston always said he could have gotten up but didnt because
1.He wasn't given a count by the referee.
2.Ali was standing over him.

Liston showed no reaction to the the first right hand, I watched the fight last night and again this morning.

Nat Fleischer merely acceded to the timekeepers request ,to make Walcott aware that the timekeeper had counted to 14 over Sonny.
So much misinformation being bandied about here!

Ali did not , "overexcite himself into a complete frenzy,at the weigh in" less than half an hour after taking his pulse Dr Robbins at the request of Angelo Dundee ,took it again ,and it was normal. It was a calculated act to throw Liston off balance .Great God I though everyone knew this by now? Seems I was wrong!
"Quite a shellacking"?
Here are the score cards.

• Referee: Barney Felix 57-57
• Judge: Gus Jacobson 56-58
• Judge: Bunny Lovett 58-56
• Unofficial AP Scorecard: 56-58
• Unofficial UPI Scorecard: 56-58
• Two points between them and note the referee had it dead level.

what choice did Sonny have? He couldn’t have gotten up if he wanted to. Ali was stood over him making gestures. He was not obliged to get up until he got a count.

Have you heard the audio? What proof do you have that Ali said that?

it was none of Nats business. If you knew the rules you would have known the time keepers count only comes into play once the fighter has made his way to a neutral corner. Ali was behaving like an over excited man child who would not listen or allow himself to obey Walcott. It was reminiscent of his immature behaviour at the weigh in and stoppage of their last fight.
