Fleischer only did what the timekeeper asked him to do.

"Boxing matches have an official timekeeper who starts counting seconds as soon as a boxer is on the ground. At the same time, the referee pauses the fight, sends the other standing boxer to a neutral corner, and then picks up the count from the timekeeper. This is why you usually see the ref start counting at 3 or 4, and not 1.

Once the ref picks up the count, it’s up to them to finish at their pace. For example, if the standing boxer doesn’t stay in their corner then the ref will pause the count to give more time to the fallen boxer as a deterrence.

Notice that it’s called the 10-count rule and not the 10-second rule. The count doesn’t have to be exactly accurate, and it almost never is."

When the count is excessively long, it’s called a slow count or a long count, but it’s not illegal because it’s up to the ref, even if it causes a lot of controversy."

" It seems that what happens now — at least when the still-standing boxer moves to the neutral corner without delay — is that, yes, the ref doesn't start the count until the still-standing boxer reaches the corner, but when he does so, he picks up the count not from one, but from a count started by a timekeeper the moment the knocked down boxer hits the canvas, meaning the first number the ref calls out could be two or three, and the knocked-down boxer doesn't get more than ten seconds to get up."

What you quoted is only confirming what I said:

The time keeper has no authority to command the referee to observe a ten second rule if it is called the ten count rule!

    A journalist has zero authority.

The timekeeper counted to 12. 12 not 12 seconds! I never suggested that Fleischer had any authority ,he was merely doing what the timekeeper asked of him,
My post states that a timekeeper commences counting the moment a boxer is knocked down which is in direct contradiction of what you asserted which was this.
"If you knew the rules you would have known the time keepers count only comes into play once the fighter has made his way to a neutral corner".So its you who does not know the rules!

Got something more for you to deny.

Ali was as sceptical as his public and he stood over Liston in disbelief.he waved him up with his gloved hand and snarled at him

What have you to say to that?

But The timekeeper counts seconds from his stopwatch. So it is seconds. He can count the seconds off to 100 it won’t matter. The only count that counts is the referee ten count. The ten count rule applies to the referee only. It’s basically a time-out until the boxer is in the neutral corner. He starts only when he is satisfied and he can start at one. If the fighter is in the corner he can take up the timekeepers seconds but it’s up to him. He dosnt have to. he can start a count from one if the timekeeper is up 20. as late as he likes.

I am aware of this.we seem to be at cross purposes on this. and looking again at your earlier post I think its entirely my fault, much though it pains me to say so. I didnt look closely enough at this part of your earlier post.
"If you knew the rules you would have known the time keepers count only comes into play once the fighter has made his way to a neutral corner." I misinterpreted it and things only went to the wall after that.
Surprisingly I find we are in broad agreement that, Liston did not get up because he did not get a count and he was worried about Ali," doing a Dempsey on him", as he tried to rise. I don't think the punch was hard enough to scramble his senses and when he begins to rise and then flops down again I find that very unconvincing. I dont think Ali thought the punch was particularly hard and his actions and shouted words to Liston indicate this. Added to this is his remark to his brother ,"he laid down". and Liston's own testimony that the punch did not hurt him.
I think Sonny just said **** it!
The new book stating Liston's wife and adopted son were kidnapped by the Muslims and threatened with death if he didn't go into the tank I think is a crock of ****, I haven't read it but I've seen interviews with the author and he never once offers any proof for his assertions.

    That’s quite alright. Apology accepted.

yeah that book! What an idiot. The guy lost the plot in a serious way. Interviewed the ghost of Sonny.. it’s laughable.

I came across this quote from A.J. Liebling about Patterson whilst re-reading "The Sweet Science": "He is a vain fellow, a great asset in a fighting man . . . His temperament is not evil but he craves admiration."

    That’s a very odd observation.
Floyd craved admiration? He often stated that he didn’t like attention and missed being able to go unrecognised. Always came across as a shy dutiful man drawn only to the one thing he excelled at whilst feeling terribly obliged to live up to expectations.

Hard for me to accept Liston has no blame in the farce when he clearly feigns being hurt & stays down. You can blame others as well, but their part in it is initiated by the bad faith acting of Liston.
