After fighting and moving beautifully on the outside for several rounds, Ali sits in the pocket and trades jabs with a tiring Sonny Liston.

I like this part of the fight. Ali shows his more convential skills. People who call him an unschooled freak of nature should really see how effortlessly he slips those jabs and comes back with his own left.

Anyone else think Ali looks better than Holmes jabbing at this distance here?

    What's wrong with Liston,gassing after 5 rounds?

Liston's jab was so slow, that even if you slipped it you would be hit with it on your way back. What a powerful jab though.

Try going for the knockout early against a fighter that moves like Ali, and see if you have any gas left in the tank.

A guy who can make you miss with everything can do screwy things to you.
I don’t see Mike Tyson doing so hot at this point of the fight either tbh.

that's why 53 years later people still believe Ali was the greatest. that's influence for you.

Ali's jab was better than Holmes. Ali's superior movement made his jab a more powerful weapon. Add to this prime Ali was so much quicker than all other hwts including Holmes.

In the pocket would mean Ali is standing in front of Liston rather than moving.

Ali was so quick he might have nipped off for a quick frame of snooker before the TKO :ciappa:

He had quicker foot speed than just every heavyweight but not necessarily hand speed.

Wrong. Ali's jab was measured against SRR jab. Ali's was way quicker.

Ali prior to that round was constantly circling Liston. Here he is standing in front of Sonny and still Liston can't hit him.

Allegedly, anyway. All I've seen on this are vague second-hand quotes about some comparison that Jim Jacobs allegedly conducted.
