Within the clip above there is a nice short example of Rocky using angles fluidly, and his IQ.

    https://streamable.com/pbbii

He keeps moving his head, and it ends up right on the end of Savolds jab range.
Rocky realizes this and adjusts his mechanics so that he can side step the jab, and clip him with an overhand right. Then he follows it with an uppercut and keeps them pressure going.

    Very fluid.

He does look a lot better than people make out, doesn't he?

To be honest I think Marciano looks very sloppy here he misses almost as much as he lands and often by feet!

Tell me what you see there you don't see in my clip?

Savold was a badly mauled 36 year old with tremendous mileage on his clock and 40 losses, this was his last fight.
Ruiz was 24 years old had lost just 2 of his previous27 fights and would go another4 years before losing to Holyfield.

Damn I would not want to be in Savold's shoes at that time. Literally every single time he tries getting away Marciano is in his chest every second of the way. Misses a left hook and Savold shuffles to the right, normally any other fighter wouldn't have been able to follow suit because their weight is going to the right from the left hook but Marciano still keeps pressure on with fast footwork.

Marciano misses about half his punches it seems but in all actuality a 50% connect rate is extremely good. Pretty sure Marciano was landing higher than 50% though.

I would expect any ranked heavyweight to look good against the stationary Savold.
Who BTW, had not been ranked for 2 years.

"The will was there but not the body," said Daly. "I'm going to advise Lee to retire from the ring tomorrow."

John (Ox) DaGrosa, Pennsylvania state athletic commissioner, said he was going to suspend Savold indefinitely and ask him to retire"

Yes Marciano put Savold into retirement. Was this point supposed to take away from Marciano?

I don't think any heavyweight would look good against Savold. Savold had very good defense, a very good punch and could make a lot of guys look bad.

See the Marciano fight as evidence of his defense and his ko ratio as evidence of his punch

I agree—he looked pretty sloppy and exposed himself in ways that could have been dangerous against a big peak heavyweight. Over-under on Tua v. old Savold: 90 seconds?

What about guys who knocked him out inside of two rounds? He’d be n stopped ten times before the Marciano fight—must have made some of those guys look good.

Lem Franklin, Elmer Ray, and Harry Bobo. All were pretty good particularly Elmer Ray who had knocked out Ezzard Charles previously. The rest that knocked him out in the first 2 rounds are irrelevant fights, they were against an early version of Lee Savold.

You point out he got knocked out 11 times but you don't mention that he had 140 professional fights against a ton of game fighters. If his chin was bad like you're implying then I'm sure Buddy Baer would have capitalized on it.

Btw I'm saying he was a game fighter, not the second coming of Gene Tunney.

I see Bald Foreman replacing savold and being dealt the exact same fate that savold suffered .

You said well: a BALD Foreman. Prime George would be too much for Rocky.

Getting stopped ten times in 40 fights is a big deal. When you have 143 fights it's no big deal getting stopped ten times.

It would be interesting to see how many times Tua gets stopped in 143 fights.

it was effective but not "fluid." Just as the voice over says "watch him try a roundhouse right" Marciano steps to his left, crossing his right foot behind his left (it wasn't a pivot) leaving him unbalanced. He then had to move his left foot to maintain balance and throw the right hand. If it had been a "fluid" move, he'd have moved his left foot first then moved his right foot leaving him balanced and ready to throw his punch. If his opponent had thrown a punch while Rocky had the right foot crossed behind the left, Rocky might have gone down because his feet were in the wrong place.
