Missing a punch by a lot, but then reading the positioning of your opponent, and using your momentum to close the distance off the missed punch isn’t a flaw to me.

It’s turning a miss into an opportunity.
And that is what he constantly does.
Don’t you think it’s strange that he often doesn’t pay for these supposed mistakes, but rather maintains the upper hand in the fight? Everyone knows it takes more than brawn to do that on the top level. Let’s not impose naïveté on ourselves by chalking it up to stupid courage.

Again we can compare actual punch numbers with other legendary HWs, since I think there is a gap between our perceptions in his skill.

You know what happens to fighters that often display the traits you just describe? They end up on their ass seeing stars. Am I right?

Sound like a face forward punch eating machine to you? Not to me.
No coincidence that when you look at his footage he actually does have decent defensive instincts for a fighter with his style.

 

If Rocky was who his critics said he was here is how his fights would play out:

He gets out punched 10 to 1 every fight. And he always loses the round, unless he lands a lucky bomb and wins the round and/or the fight. That’s how it would go down according to those descriptions.

But it isn’t.
He usually wins every round.
He usually maintains the upper hand during the majority of the fight and he outlands his opponents.

The “Marciano double standard” is baffling. It’s honestly the main reason I care so much. When we get rid of the weird double standard we have for him, we can finally weigh him against his peers in a regular manner.

 

It’s stylistic.
He knows the punch might miss, but he also knows that the momentum will bring him closer to his opponent at an angle where he won’t get hit coming in.

That’s how he remains on the upper hand of the fight.

Normally if a guy misses by a few feet, he is so off balance that his opponent can bewlider him with a flurry of punches or even finish him off. Notice the difference with Rocky?

That’s what I mean by fluid.
It’s all connected.
