Why did Baer have such a tough time against Tommy Farr? Short clip of Baer eating punches during his loss to Farr: https://streamable.com/k8ft2 Clip from the post-fight interview after beating Farr in the rematch: https://streamable.com/9bi4m
The bout was only 4 months before Farr fought very well in bout with Louis in Louis first defence of the title, most felt Farr would be a relatively easy opponent, he gave Louis a fight and a fright. So Farr was in excellent form at that stage of his career, and again Max as he sometimes did played to the crowd believing he could despatch Farr when he wished, but alas Farr had other ideas.
Basically everybody had trouble with Farr. It is like asking "why did this guy struggle with Jimmy Young?".
As mentioned Farr was peaking and proved to be a difficult top level contender at this point. Baer was also winding down, not training as hard consistently, getting lazier in the ring, while plagued by hand injuries and a new vulnerability to cuts. I know reports state Baer got a bad cut early on in first fight with Farr that bothered him.
People ask why a declining Baer, lost to such non entities at Tommy Farr and Lou Nova! Because they were pretty darn good!!!
Well standing still like a hanging punching bag with a low guard, zero ability to counter, and not having the threat of a jab, sort of allows a skilled guy to tee off. The funny part is there are two posters here who think the same Max Baer would be Vitali Klitschko.
If the jab in that clip was landing, imagine a Larry Holmes jab vs. Baer, or lots of other nice jabs vs. Baer. That guy was jabbing Baer and stepping straight back with his jab low. A good fighter would have followed the jab back with a right hand. From the video I've seen of Baer, he lacks even basic boxing skills. That he was a champion makes me believe he fought in an extremely weak era.
Farr had a great jab and really good footwork. Honestly the fact that someone decided to make this into a thread where the point is to show that Baer was a bad boxer makes me question what theyre looking at when they watch these films. I can show you better fighters taking worse damage. Not sure what the function of this thread aims to be beyond defaming a legend of the sport.
Quick, someone clip that one time Kell Brook landed a combo on Golovkin who just stood there and took it. *cracks knuckles* I have people to take down, and an agenda to push.
Tommy Farr was very tough competition. Incredibly high skill level. Not too many expected Braddock to be able to beat him after his loss to joe Louis, but i guess Braddocks always been the underdog.
Couldn't have said it better. By the way, imagine Farr coming in with that low left and then backing straight out with his dropped jab against guys like Bowe, Witherspoon, or Deontay Wilder...
Again you fall back on the hypothetical. The bottom line is that while a few people beat Farr, nobody seemed to have an easy time with him. Baer struggled with him. Louis struggled with him. Loughran struggled with him. Braddock struggled with him. Nova struggled with him. Do we see a pattern forming?
Discussions involving head-to-head match-ups with fighters from different eras are by definition hypothetical... Not sure if you watched the footage, but do you doubt that Witherspoon, Wilder, and Bowe could have exploited the jabbing technique shown and harmed him with huge right hands? Or is Farr's underrated old-school greatness some kind of a force field that protects him from such punches? Do you think they would have stood there and eaten Farr's punches like Baer, who seemed to lack the defensive reflexes and acumen to avoid them?
