Yeah. The first was razor close, but perhaps with a slight edge to Toney. A draw was fair, but so would a win for Toney have been. The second, though, has always been clear for McCallum when I've scored it. I can't get my head around why this isn't a bigger controversy.
I had the 1st fight a draw with Toney probably having the edge overall with the more eye catching big punches and the big finish in the 12th round. The 2nd fight I thought McCallum edged it as Toney was less active in the 2nd fight and for me McCallum outworked him.
I think McCallum did a better job of neutralising those big right hands in the rematch and therefore managed to win most rounds with his greater activity, as you say.
Heres my scorecards for both fights if you're interested. James Toney vs Mike McCallum 1 1 McCallum 2 Toney 3 McCallum 4 Toney 5 McCallum 6 Toney 7 McCallum 8 Toney 9 McCallum 10 Toney 11 McCallum 12 Toney 114-114 Draw I've haven't seen this fight in years and this is the 1st time i've actually sat down and scored it properly, but i have to say i loved this fight. Probably one of the highest skilled high paced technical fights ever real artistry beautiful fight. What's funny about this fight is i don't think i've ever scored a fight with both men never winning 2 rounds in a row, my scorecard must look really weird but that's how i saw it. Overall it did appear to me that Toney did slightly have the better of it, with his cleaner and much more effective punches especially with the right hand which was his money punch. And he did have the best moments in the fight hurting McCallum in rounds 10 and 12, especially the 12th round where it looked like McCallum was ready to go at the end. But at times McCallum would outwork Toney with his jab and body punches, and although i do like quality over quantity. In some rounds McCallum just landed too many punches overall for him not to be given those rounds. I would say finally the draw is probably one of the most legit draws i've ever seen, certainly nothing wrong with this fight being scored a draw as it was very close. But like i said it did appear Toney did have the better of it overall, but looking at my RBR i scored it a draw so there you have it. Mike McCallum vs James Toney 2 1 Toney 2 McCallum 3 McCallum 4 Toney 5 McCallum 6 McCallum 7 Toney 8 Toney 10-8 point deduction 9 McCallum 10 McCallum 11 Toney 12 McCallum 114-113 McCallum So i decided to watch their 2nd fight after watching the 1st fight last month, i thought this time around McCallum was unlucky not to get the decision. He went to the body more in this fight and out punched Toney to win a close decision IMO. In the 1st fight Toney's power punches especially the right hand were alot more apparent, in the 2nd fight not so much and Toney didn't look as good in this fight and wasn't active enough for me overall. The point deduction was total BS aswell and not needed, and the judges scorecards were horrendous aswell. McCallum outlanded Toney by 100 punches and lost by 117-110 on two scorecards ? Overall not as good as their first fight, but McCallum made a few adjustments and was slightly better with the jab in this fight and went to the body more. Toney i think overall looked slightly worse in the rematch, and was not as active and his power punches were not as apparent or effective compared to their 1st meeting.
Two great fights, but the first is just something special. And no one ever hurt McCallum like Toney did in that fight.
From memory the only other time I remember McCallum really being shaken up was by Curry, but yeah Toney possibly could've stopped McCallum in their 1st fight with a bit more time. And yeah McCallum/Toney 1 is probably one my most favourite technical fights ever. Holmes/Norton McCallum/Toney 1 Masterclasses.
Jackson also shook McCallum. But Toney really hurt him, as you said could possible have stopped him with more time. And Mike had some whiskers.
I had Norton winning all three against Ali, although the second and third fights were very close. I had GGG winning the first two against Canelo, and if the judges weren't so corrupt Canelo would never have been in a position to have the third bout. In fact, if GGG had been given the first verdict and Canelo had been properly punished for the positive drugs test result, that might have been the end of the ginger one.
In the 1st fight, the snap went out of McCallum's punches after about the 5th round. He was jabbing very well but Toney was the one coming up with all the big rights. In rounds, I had it 7-4-1 to Toney, but a 7-5 Toney would also be fine by me. Haven't rewatched the 2nd one but it is one of my favourite fights. I will see how I score it this time around.
