Not the athlete Jones was, but close enough for the comparison to be made. Safe to say Lomachenko is more skilled and has a better ring IQ though. Roy's career was effectively over when he couldn't get by on his athleticism alone.

 

Will there be another Roy Jones? Probably not.

 

Too bad he also had Amir Khan's chin and Wilder's technical boxing skills if we're honest.

 

Lomachenko is IMO the better overall athlete, he has a higher IQ and is a quicker learner. He would be good in just about any sport where his small size wouldn't be a problem. I can't picture Roy Jones being successful in say grand prix racing or some other sport where you need to learn high technical skills. Loma would probably be a fast and consistent driver with his great mental focus. Lomachenko was also very good at sambo and wrestling when he was young, I doubt Roy Jones would excell in those sports where you need pure physical strength more than speed and reflexes. I'm pretty sure Loma would be a better football player than Jon Jones as well.

Jon Jones had great athletic attributes for boxing but he was more or less a one trick pony. Everything revolved around his superior speed and reflexes and when that was gone it was over. I'm sure Loma will be a decent fighter for a longer time.

I get your point, although there's clearly more than a little bit of an exaggeration, e.g. Khan's chin is far worse and RJJ's was alright before he came back down from HW. And RJJ's fundamentals are also far better than Wilder's, nowhere near as good as Loma or Floyd but let's put it this way: he doesn't throw windmills.

 

You are both correct, nearly all the attributes in the 1st post are athletic ones, all of which prime RJJ was supreme at. Other than that, though, RJJ wasn't special.

 

I don't think they had similar styles. They were both fast and explosive, but that's it. Pacquiao used more upper body movement. He was more aggressive and robust as well. And would regularly eat/absorb shots just to throw his own while sustaining a non stop workrate. Where Jones was so fast he liked to just land and then move out of the way and then just do it all over again.

 

I think they were both unorthodox and got by mostly on their superior reflexes and speed. Of course their styles were different but I see them having very similar attributes which contributed to them being successful.
