... had he fought all the rounds like he did the 11th (though he could have fought better than that, too). Land punches and then quickly get the hands back into position. Had he been disciplined and methodical using that approach I'd give him very good odds. Everybody's elated about Pac but he didn't show much. Impressive combos, but that's about it. He wasn't bad but it wasn't in any way anything else but an average Pac performance despite James Lampley's cumming, and everybody else's. Clottey fought disgracefully and what's worse he wasn't ashamed of it. At one point he blatantly tried to land an elbow (and not in the phone booth, but from the outside, while coming in). Lamps, I still like him, but he's a goof and not as bright as he tends to come across as. Beyond the bang bang bit, there's that time when he, after the Clottey Cotto fight, asked Clottey, with a smug grin on his face, "You told us yesterday that you thought you could win a decision over Cotto here, do you still think so?". Some other situations come to mind... Kellerman is getting more comfortable and isn't shitting his pants when he steps in front of the camera any more. **** you, Clottey.
I completely disagree, Clottey fought the way 90% of people thought he was going to, and I thought he gave a good account of himself to be quite honest. Prior to the match, the ideology stipulating a Clottey victory was that Pac may punch himself out and tire by the late rounds, leaving Clottey a chance to grab the KO. Clottey showed he's got just about the best defensive guard in boxing, and he showed talent in counter punching. It's not Clottey's fault he can't beat a fighter who's punch combinations can knock somebody out with a single flush punch. By no exaggeration, Pacquiao is an absolute monster. Speed and power in absolute abundance, and stamina to fuel those combinations for 12 rounds (and probably longer). I don't think we should berate Clottey for going 12 rounds with Pac. He was looking for a 1 punch counter KO, he just didnt get it...
Clottey should have opened up more. It didn't appear any one punch from Pac was hurting him. Had of Clottey let his hands go I think he would have made it a closer fight without a doubt. He fought to go 12 rounds and survive though
You throw a fast punch and than get the hand back into guard position as quickly as you can. That'd have worked for him. Put him in very little danger and I'd give him a very good chance to stop Pac. He didn't see it because, in his mind, Pac is Jesus Christ with gloves on. He showed that he was a top notch talent and not quite that strong a person.
I don't think it makes sense to say what Clottey COULD have done if you are not Clottey. How do you know what he could have done? Maybe that was all he could do. If he opened up, he might have scored more, but he would have gotten hit more too.
I think the main reason we saw pac get hit a lot tonight because he left his defense during the entire fight. Which initially i thought was part of clottey's plan, you fight like that for a good 6 or 7 rounds and your opponent will get overconfident, leave his defense and become open for a lot of opportunities, but what went wrong was pac is was just a machine that night, never even got tired after throwing around 1000 punches..and showed to have a great chin taking full shots like that from clottey, those shots put cotto on his bike
Because I can see how fast his hands are and how accurate he puches when he throws them. Look at the punch stats, IDK what they are but he landed at a very high percentage. I'm not saying he should have opened up in the sense of fighting in any other way than that in which he fights, what I mean is that he should have done more of that which he did in the fight which is to throw and quickly cover up after that and not ever get into exchanges. Clottey should have won this fight.
That's how Clottey fights though, I mean you just can't be offensive when you're implementing that shell-like defence, especially when your opponent is throwing 100 punches per round. You can't do both, you just can't. Maybe Clottey could have been more offensive, but that's just not how he fights. That's why he lost to Cotto and Margarito as well, I don't understand how people expected anything else from him...
Well I dont know if he could have won but he could definately but up a better fight than hiding behide his gloves and throw 1 punch a round
Well all I'm saying is, Clottey should not be "disgraced" with his performance. It's not his fault he can't contend with the p4p king, all he can do is give his best performance, and I think he gave a good account of himself.
Well throwing and covering up is what every boxer wants to do. The same advice would work for anyone. Sometimes it isn't about what one fighter didn't do as much as it is about what the other fighter DID do. A lot of people acting like Clottey lost the fight for himself, like there was this simple way to win and he stupidly didn't try. That is an insult to pacquiao.
