Welterweight from the 70's How good was he...? I can recall the odd article in the boxing mags at the time,but not much else. His record does n't seem that special,but pretty good.
Someone told me about him who was from Nova Scotia... Said that Clyde Grey had quite a few fights there.. Apparently, he was pretty good.
clyde gray fought out of toronto after leaving nova scotia,he was in the chuvalo camp.he was a pretty good fighter.sometime ago he got in some trouble in toronto taking money or something
Gray was a beautiful boxer, a sharp puncher, had all the skills but just came along during a rough era in boxing. I saw his fight with Napoles for the title and he gave Napoles all he could handle. Didn't see the Espada fight but heard it could have gone either way. I was always verry impressed with Gray. A really complete fighter. Scartissue
yeah he was a great fighter and my first coach in boxing, he coached me when i was like 13-14..... i remember seeing him in his 50's go and spar guys who were fighting at light heavyweight and he would beat them like kids.... very nice guy, could be a little less lazy as a coach but a good coach nonethe less
I've only seen him against Napoles and he gave a good account of himself,i have his fight against El Hombre but i haven't seen it yet.
I saw that fight too. Gray was doing nicely, got off to a good start, but Muniz was working his way back into the fight and then just exploded in the 9th. Great memories of an exciting time in boxing. And Gray was in the thick of it. Scartissue
Grey was really getting to Napoles in that last round, maybe could have won that fight if he had been a bit more relaxed.He seemed to be trying to implement a gameplan just a bit too rigidly, and did better when he just fought naturally. really good boxer-puncher, much better than most Welter champs of recent years, and was well on the downside of his career when Cuevas blew him out.
About the level of Gaylord Barnes of the 50's. Tough workhorse very rarely stopped, but didnt do much apart from holding his own against some top level, past it elite fighters(namely Robinson)
