Anybody just catch that? They basically told it like it was, that the sport is broken and in complete need of an overhaul. It has become irrelevant to actual boxing with the tiny scoring area on both the gloves and especially the head and body, with a arbitrary small and in the case of the body completely non existent area. Talked about how the judges are not being asked to judge, but rather to play a video game. Interviewed the president of IABA, who seemed well intentioned but absolutely clueless; he wanted to start a pro amateur boxing league.

Teddy Atlas said it best, as he so often does, "Its like when you have a child who does something wrong and you tell them they need to earn your trust back"; amateur boxing has to earn our trust back because it is for all intents and purposes a completely lost cause that needs to be scrapped and started from scratch.

Like I said a couple of days ago, this has been the WORST scoring in amatuer boxing Ive seen in my entire life. In almost every fight I saw it compleatly sucked. There is no other way of calling it and I agree with you the sport needs a complete make-over. I wonder what the process is on selecting the judges for the olympics?

They should keep the scoring live, but have it so each judge has his own score imo.

Cubans keep proving this point wrong. (Just watch their scores... and you wont argue with it) If the usa fighters would have won or even given a close fights Teddy and Joe wont be making such a big deal.

Yeah, because it couldn't just be one bunch of commies getting help from another bunch of commies; oh no.

yep the scoring has sucked and it looks like they wanted to get rid of most of the favs early in the tournment...

also the russian boxers getting screwed is bad too, also some others fighters also got the same....

maybe the worst case is this...

some thought he would win the whole thing.... but u can't fight refs and judges...i will say people had to be paid off here...if not please explain this...

this is beyond a robbery...the chinese guy looked like he didn't even know how to box

Its not even an issue of if the scoring is done properly, its that the very goal of the scoring is inherently wrong. Proper boxing isn't just not rewarded, its punished in favor of this new sport asinine rules have created that is boxing in name only.

What, in your book, would be proper boxing and the best way to reward it?

Clean, effective punching. The best way to reward it would of course be to have some sort of system to differentiate between a punch that simply lands and a punch that is effective. How to do that while removing bias and being transparent? I don't have a perfect answer.

That's the problem. It's too subjective. That's why the force of a blow isn't taken into account.

Right. Cuba has a really good team this year, and they know how to play the system, but they're still getting credit left and right for punches that don't work for anyone else.

Id rather trust reasonable people to be subjective, than to be objective about an irrelevant issue.

Its not like less people get screwed in the olympics than the pro's, but at least in the pros they are getting screwed on the relevant issue.

What's that; who can make the promoter or TV network more money in the long run? The problem with the amateurs is when you start bringing national biases into it things get hairy.
