Carlos Ortiz was a fighter , not a historian of d sport . There r smarter ppl than any fighter and than every poster here including myself who don't know who Cocoa Kid was , and fighters have better things 2 do than studying (especially d unvideorecorded) history of d sport b4 and also and more so after their retirement .
I can't say that i really know anything about him except that he was a fighter , and was even and still surprise and doubt his being Puerto Rican . It may b a good sign 4 Ortiz as a person 2 not pretend 2 know anything when he doesn't , (he is) just unlike so many posters here .
From my memory , Ortiz' record does not imply true greatness either , but maybe there should b n appreciation/school me thread about him , but usually when i m not impressed by a record i remain this way and all facts brought usually only reinforce my initial impressions , at least by now , even if it wasn't always this way .

I'm glad you looked into this. Somebody needs to stand up for this guy. If that's the best the IBHOF can do then shame on them.

The issue isn't Ortiz. He expressed surprise when he was called to the podium to induct Cocoa Kid. He didn't know who Cocoa Kid was and that right there should have been all it took for the IBHOF to say, "okay, thanks anyway" and then contact someone who did --like me!

That's a shitty thing to do both to Ortiz and Cocoa Kid. Did the IBHOF not even bother to try?

Yeah. He was being inducted but didn't speak. Weird.

Define "true greatness" Frank and give us a couple of examples.

Stonehands, thanks for clearing that up. I take that back. The IBHOF on the other hand, well....

The IBHOF is at fault. I can only imagine the embarrassment and confusion of having to pay tribute and make a speech about a person you know nothing about on stage only because you are presumably from the same country he was from.

It's difficult enough to gain information on Cocoa Kid even through extensive research.

I was speaking generally ,Ortiz was a great fighter, he belongs in any hall of great fighters. The IBHOF means Jack **** to me as far as standing goes, nice opportunity to see some former greats in the flesh , maybe get your photo taken with them ,thats about it. It's a pity they didn't let Stonehands handle things.
At least we know it was not Ortiz's fault.

I was hoping you'd show up on this thread. I haven't contacted the CT press, but I'm working on an essay now called "A Crown for Cocoa Kid" and will be sure it gets to them. I going to try like hell to get it published everywhere possible to try to undo what happened.

    This ain't over.

Don't worry Frank doesn't think Muhammad Ali's great either and Ezzard Charles has no buisness in the top 30 P4P .
