Coincidence That Vitali Quit Right After Byrd Bashed Him Up, Clowned and Rocked Him?

Vitali was absolutely winning, but Byrd had been coming on quite a bit stronger, and it was hardly the whitewash some revisionist circles would have you believe.

At the end of the day, Vitali was injured and he did not want to continue, resulting in a stoppage win for Byrd.

A shame that rematch never happened, especially since Vitali and Byrd were #1 and #2 for a brief stretch a few years after their first fight. The rematch made perfect sense in that small 2004 window, but unfortunately it never happened.

Byrd was definitely coming on strong, pushing Vitali back and piecing him up with his pinpoint crispy shots. It was far from a done deal that Vitali would have won had he just hung in the fight. Maybe he would have nicked it on points, but I could only see Byrd sweeping the remaining rounds, probably in quite emphatic fashion.

A side note but I don't see why people have such a hard time accepting this. Byrd was a phenomenal fighter, one of the most skilled HWs of all time with a style geared towards beating far bigger opponents. It wasn't some coincidence the fight unfolded as it did, though obviously the injury was a bit of good luck.

Good post I agree entirely I don't know people think Vitali was dominating Byrd. He was coming on after the 5th round and had his best round of the fight in the 9th round prior to the stoppage, I had it 5-4 for Vitali at the time of the stoppage. And I think its perfectly reasonable to have Byrd winning 3 or 4 rounds, the fight was competitive all the way through.

Its often forgotten that Byrd was also at a disadvantage in that fight.

He got the call on a weeks notice , never saw any footage of Vitali and travelled over to Germany weighing around 208lbs. Vitali sweeping the early rounds was by virtue of Byrd doing very little while he attempted to adapt to an opponent he had zero preparation for.
A rematch was needed but Vitali opted for easier opponent Timmo Hoffman instead while Byrd was made fight Wlad
