I read the title and knew it was about Monzon

Aside from Louis I can't think of a fighter better fitting to this description.

 

A real case could be made for Monzon having a superior straight right cross to Arguello and Louis. His jab and hook were not quite in the class of theirs. He needed his right to be great.

 

As good a right hand as a man can throw...thought so back in '70 when watching the tape on Wide World..Cosell did the announcing, and kept referring to the "unknown, unheralded Carlos Monzon"...Monzon's right hand was a bomb and remained so until arthritis took it's toll..that and a bullet lodged in his right shoulder, courtesy of a wife of his.

Carlos Monzon could be the biggest and strongest middleweight i have ever seen! every time i watch him he looks more and more like a lightheavyweight! the size of the man's back and shoulders. its unreal to think that he could make that weight when it was day of fight weigh in and still be so strong, can you imagine if monzon would of had day before weigh in

 

No, that's one of those internet fabrications..probably just an innocent mistake broadcast on the web...Monzon was shot twice in the right arm by his wife at the time (1973). One bullet was surgically removed and the other remained for some reason...it no doubt played a role, along with arthritis (Carlos had to have cortisone injections frequently) that caused him to make certain subtle alterations to his style..one being to pull the power of the right and be less dependent on it.

 

His jab was superior to Louis or Arguello's imo.

Simply one of the best, most effective right hand punchers of all-time.

 

One thing i noticed in some of his fights is that he was very busy with the jab and the one two.
The right hand to sort nino out was indeed a bomb,it seems he was faster and more of a puncher before his injuries set in,yet some of his detractors look at his later fights and say he was mechanical,slow and not a huge puncher ,thats like judging hagler on his 86-87 hagler form instead of the 82-83 or earlier versions...

 

What difference would it have made?

 

Monzon's jab was superior, a hypnotic weapon that lulled his opponents into the range of the right. Monzon was a superior fighter than either Arguello or Louis in the big picture. Not as spectacular perhaps, but he proved himself superior.

 

I Suppose it depends on wether he ever had trouble doing the weight.

 

He did for the second Emile Griffith fight but that's about the only time I heard of him having trouble making weight.
