This content is protected David Barnes is looking to make up for lost time in 2012, and that begins next Friday (Feb 24) when the 31-year old returns against Giuseppe Lauri in Bolton to headline The Italian Job presented by Coldwell Boxing. After almost two years out of the sport, Barnes returned to winning ways with a points victory over Isaac Quartery last November. The Bolton resident is now keen to show people what theyve been missing at the De Vere Whites, Reebok Stadium next Friday night. I wanna show people that Im back in the game and that Im better than ever, Barnes said when speaking to coldwellboxing.com. The former two-weight British champion has experienced his fair share of ups and downs in the sport but after less than thirty fights, the southpaw is feeling better than ever. Im better now than I was when I was 21, he declared. A statement spookily similar to those that Coldwell stablemate Ryan Rhodes made when he recaptured past glories when winning the European light-middleweight title a month shy of his 33rd birthday. The Sheffield veteran acts as an inspiration for Barnes. Rhodes has been there and done it himself. Of course, I look up to guys like Ryan and what they have achieved. Fighters like Bernard Hopkins too are very inspirational. When youre young, you do daft things. You stay out late, you have a few drinks and it soon hits home that you have to dedicate yourself more. Nowadays, I dont go out and theres no late nights, Ive dedicated myself. Its just me and boxing. In facing Lauri, he takes on an individual that has fought and won not only European titles but has also shared the ring with fellow Brits such as the legendary Ricky Hatton. Barnes insists that the preparation he has put in this for this contest shows to himself how much he is back in love with the sport and how little he dares to look beyond this fight. If you do look beyond or too far ahead you can get a little bit disillusioned, explained Barnes. Im looking at Lauri and Lauri only. And once my promoter, Dave Coldwell, gets me my next fight Ill look at whoever that is and them only. All Im concentrating on is going in there and doing the business and hopefully I can get a shot at a good title. Im focused, much more mature in the head and simply better overall. Having rarely been in wars that normally shorten a fighters career, and not been marked up too often, the former Prizefighter contestant has plenty of miles left on the clock. Barnes has unfinished business in the ring, unreached goals and with Coldwell Boxing by his side hes ready to get back to where he belongs. To be honest I shouldve been a world champion by now. Am I satisfied with my achievements, my career? No, not really. I know what Im capable of doing. Working with Coldwell is great for me at this stage in my career. Dave is one of the best promoters out there and is gonna get to the top just like me. David Barnes continues marching towards European honours as he takes on 4 x European Title Challenger Giuseppe Lauri on the 24th February in Bolton. Lauri was originally slated to take on Curtis Woodhouse in Birmingham in March but now takes on the talented southpaw. Barnes is relishing the chance to improve on Paul McCloskey's result against Lauri and would love a showdown with the Irishman in the future, hopefully after Paul gains a World title. McCloskey took eleven rounds to stop Lauri, and Barnes is desperate to impress the fans more. "I watched that fight on tv and I've watched it again last night after my manager Dave Coldwell told me I might be fighting him. It was a tricky fight for McCloskey, but I know I can do a better job than him. I'm a better boxer than both of them, and I think I punch harder. In fact since coming back, I feel so strong, I'm definitely punching harder than I used to. I don't know if it's because I've matured physically or it's because I'm more relaxed but I just know I'm punching so much harder. When I had my comeback fight I hurt the African everytime I hit him. More than what McAllister did when he fought for the Commonwealth title. But I injured my shoulder and basically just fought one handed for half the fight. No excuse, the fans saw it. Luckily it was just muscular so I'm back firing in the gym, going to have a couple days off for Christmas and then straight back into it. I just can't wait to box again, I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying my boxing again. I know I'm gonna win titles. I want to be European champion first then I want to get a world title shot. I know I've got yhe talent to do it, always have had talent, everyone always knew that. But now I've got the mindset. I wasn't before. I'm focused now and I have a team that know what I can do and believe in me. I just can't wait to fight at Bolton. It's only about fifteen minutes up the road from my home so it's going to be bouncing in there! Then there's Prince Arron on the bill too. It's going to be proper buzzing." Good interview by Terry Dooley with David Barnes over at the Scene 'David Barnes is very focused on fulfilling his potential'
I note Boxnation do not have a show next Friday This is the sort of card I would have hoped Boxnation would purchase when I signed up. Presumably Coldwell Boxing would not be asking the Kings Ransom for TV rights
