Just watched this on YouTube. It's good to see the 87 year old Colin Hart still going strong and giving his opinions and comparing fighters on the current and past heavyweight scenes. This content is protected I think he'd fit in well here on ESB as a poster. People's thoughts on his particular takes?
I can't disagree with him on anything here mate. I've been saying for ages about level of competition you just can't compare eras. I would only disagree with his Fury v Usyk decision and that is based on Fury's last performance. If he comes in sharp then I would agree.
Yep, my thoughts too for the most part mate. My honest thoughts on Fury Vs Usyk are a 50-50 if Fury's at his best. Anything less and Fury loses. I won't say the same thing regarding Usyk 'cos he's always at his best, He's already got the advantage then, as of now, Fury's one step behind already. I think all posters here will agree with at least some things Colin says, especially about the crap politics and fighters not fighting often enough or the best fighting the best, etc I always liked his no-nonsense straight talk. He says what he really thinks and always has done. A lot of modern day pundits can be pretty fickle and just follow the trend
Agree mate regarding Usyk and Fury that's exactly how I see it myself.. The problem with a lot of modern pundits is a clear bias and towing the company line blowing smoke up the arse of TV station favorites. I prefer the old schoolers who just asy it as they see it without caring if it's not in line with the narrative or not. The old timers also have several decades of knowledge and observation and can therefore have clearer context rather than the recency bias that people new to the sport can suffer from.
Nostalgia bias is as strong as recency bias, if not worse. People struggle to be objective. The old timers were human beings, just like everyone else. Henry Cooper almost took Ali's head off. I'm sure Fury, Usyk etc would've fancied their chances.
Fully agree on those points. Especially regarding the first hand experience advantage of covering decades of the sport live and as it happened. More so if you happened to be a pundit ringside at many of the past great fights- first hand knowledge then. It's gotta be better surely, rather than limited to an old YouTube clip for single reference.
That's a fair argument too mate. And if Cooper had caught any modern heavy with the exact same shot flush I'm sure he'd of nearly taken their head off too. Ali's chin and recovery was as good as any heavy in history and would be today too I think.
That is true too. the benefit though with age is having better context as you've lived through it rather than watch videos on you tube after the event. I was too young for the 70''s and only started watching from the 80's onwards. So for me personaly the 90's has been the best decade for heavyweight that I've lived through just because of the depth of competition and nearly all fought each other. Was it better than the 70's? I'm not sure really but I think most people would agree that there the best two decades out of the last six at heavy.
You can always find one instance of a fighters vulnerability. For Ali against Cooper i give you Fury v Steve Cunningham and Usyk struggling with the mediocre Chisora. The truth is as Colin points out the old timers fought far better opposition and that is a fact not nostalgia
