Following the recent British "grudge match" me and a boxing fan friend discussed all British fights we'd like to have seen and their possible outcomes.... The one that created most debate was Colin Jones against Lloyd Honeyghan. I believe that the welshman would have got to the "ragamuffin man" late he says that it would have been finished early by the south londoner :-(. It's opinions which make this sport so great (last saturday, no exception) So, Which All British fights (and there are many) that never happened would you like to have seen...........
Lloyd would have stopped Colin Jones. Both at their best no doubt about it. There was a reason one was undisputed world champion and 2 time world champion and a reason the other did not quiter make it. 2 tough guys though.
another was Ricky Hatton v Junior Witter..... I think that Jones would've needed to be cautious in the first 4 rounds but was so strong in later rounds that he'd have got to Honeyghan. Jones definitely deserved a world title too definitely won the first fight with Milton McCrory. You're right though two very tough fighters :good
What a fight! The ultra-aggressive Honeyghan that beat Curry and went on to be a damn fine Welter, would be too much for Jones. The Welshman will threaten with his left hook, but Honeyghans persistant attack would cut Jones to shreds and force a late referee/doctor stoppage. Jones had a very good chin.
I think in a prime verses prime match up, Honeyghan is winning easily, with Jones just doing well to get to the final bell. But if they actually met, say in late 83, I am leaning towards Jones' experience...
you've got to like Honeyghan, Prime for Prime, you don't hear to much about Jones these days, underrated to a degree, but he had a hell of a punch, just ask Kirkland Lang. I think Honeyghans all round boxing abllity would have been to much for him.
Kirkland Laing was an incredible athlete for someone not very dedicated and outboxed Jones twice for eight rounds, but Jones durability and punching power always made him dangerous. A form line through Don Curry says Honeyghan would win, but the Curry that Honeyghan beat was at his worst, whilst the one that opened a nasty cut on the bridge of Jones nose was in top shape. I think that Jones would have performed better against Starling and Breland too, but I think Honeyghan had lost his hunger by then.
Honeyghan was never, ever going to beat Marlon Starling whether he was on top of his game or not. Awful style match up for him. He was well on the down side for the Breland fight and didn't really get going at all in the fight. Its a shame that fight didn't happen a couple of years earlier when it was originally mooted before Honey dropped the WBA belt rather than fight the South African Harold Volbrecht (sp?),
I understand what your saying mate, but whether Curry was weight drained or not Honeyghan still had to do the business, which he did in style, Colin was ultra tough he said after he was stopped by Curry, he was never hurt and only just warming up, but Jones would have always found Honeyghans style hard to pin down, over 15rds would have been his best chance.
honeyghan if he fights the way he did against against curry and his fights before the tittle win but if he goes in and fights the way he did when he was champ then jones has a real chance. i was watching an old fight-night show a month or so back and they had a short interview with jones after he had retired on it . he made came across as not thinking much of honeyghan as a fighter in fact seemed unimpressed with honeyghan
