I recently had 2 amateur fights and won them both. My coach said I have potential and the work I have done for the last year is paying off. I am going to college next year and plan on getting a bachelors degree in 4 years. The problem is I want to stick with boxing in the amateurs but I know it is a lot of traveling around the country for tournaments as well as we don't get paid. My goals for boxing right now are to win a national gloves title in 2017. After that I want to do whatever it takes to qualify for the pan am games then the Olympics in 2020. After that turn pro by 2020/21. That sounds like a tall order and perhaps far fetched to some of you but for those that did go to college and box what was it like? Is it possible and to still do well in classes?
I believe that Carlos Palomino and Armando Munoz attended college -both became teachers -while boxing.
I'm in college and boxing right now. Your gonna have to sacrifice in order to be good at both with the sort of plans that you have. Winning Golden Gloves isn't too big of a deal honestly, going to the Olympics is another story. I hardly ever go out on the weekends, I rarely go to parties. I miss a lot of social events cause I'm training, too tired/busted up from training, or I have to devote time to school. In a way, this is good for me cause this is the sort of lifestyle a boxer should be living. But your gonna miss out on that 'college experience' which I've seen too many fighters get swept back into once they got a little popularity from fighting.
I have a choice between two schools. 1 being a commuter state college and the other being a very prestigious and well known state college that is on the other side of the state. I would have to switch gyms for that. I am not big on the college party life and that sort of thing. My main reservations are being close to a gym because I honestly am only going to college to get a degree as a fall back if boxing doesn't pan out. Don't get me wrong I am not putting all of my eggs in one basket, I like what I plan on majoring in. At my gym I have a friend that is on here, he recommended the forum to me. I'll have to ask him later what his username is.
have you researched the cities you are going to and if they have boxing? at least if there's boxing in the city? check out the USIBA boxing website (are you in the united states?). you can compete in their national tournament even if your school does not have a registered team. you'll use your same passbook and register the same way you did this year (option to register with your LBC or through USIBA which is its own LBC).
Yeah I did a lot of research before I came here. I planned out the routes to get to the gyms and everything. Both of the colleges are in the same state one and are connected. One is a commuter college and the other one is the actual main university. They are the same in name just different campuses on opposite sides of the state. I was only interested in the main university because I wouldn't have to drive to classes and the gym by them travels a lot around the region. My current gym travels but not as much.
nice! there's two leagues here in the US, and USIBA (last I worked with them a couple of years ago) was focused on true novice college boxers, with allowance for open class too. if you were a registered boxer with USAB you could compete at their nationals; put a school jersey on and represent even though your college team may not have been registered as a club.
