Patterson was made to order for Liston...Liston was all offence and no defence...Floyd tried fighting low but did not have the power ...Floyd was a done deal from the getgo

Patterson was strong too, but feels the difference up against a strong HW.

Out-timed is a good way to put it. Good timing is absolutley key to beating Patterson, the key IMO.

Watching the video, does anybody feel differently about Sonny's speed? At around 22 seconds, Liston throws a jab and then throws a big upperut right behind it - it seems he has near blistering speed in the second punch - I think that Sonny's straight punches were a bit ponderous, but his shorter work is underated for speed.

    Top vid.
He does indeed look evil going to the body.

do you know they use an mpc to put those sounds on. just a little bit of interest there

to the thread title. yeah the skills of liston are there. but i still feel like he is cumbersome and seems to hold himself odd.

Yes, yes. Material I read in the '70s lauded Liston's handspeed as incredibly fast "for a man his size".

He also gets excellent leverage into just about every type of punch. He is truly a boxer as opposed to a mere slugger with gloves on.

I've got this on VHS collection.

The colour Clay-Liston footage is good too, shot from above.

I've never agreed with those who say he had crap hand speed.
He had incredible hand speed at times. Witness the left out of nowhere that knocked Roy Harris down for the first time. How anyone can say he had slow hands after seeing that punch is beyond me.

well ali made him look slow so they say he was slow. ridiculous. ali made patterson look slow but he wasn't. another easy way for the anti-ali brigade to knock ali's victories. oh they were all dead slow, look how slow foreman was, liston was etc....etc....pathetic......they were all fast enough to beat every other fighter haha.

    Interesting view.

    1. Liston looks excellent, but Patterson shows no lateral movement that I could see. He only moves forward and backward.

    2. Johansson commented after seeing a film of Liston that one had to get off first against Liston, but Patterson never did.

    3. Patterson showed very poor survival skills. He did not move nor bob when in trouble, nor cover up well. Note at about 1:55 that he actually reaches out with his left hand and grabs the rope!

Liston looks good, but Patterson's performance was certainly subpar for a top fighter.

I personally felt that Floyd was like a rabbit caught in the headlights for both of the Liston fights,he was always going to be out gunned but he was definitely intimidated and froze. It's a puzzle though because in every other aspect of his career Floyd Patterson showed himself to be an extremely courageous fighter.

Looking at how Patterson is smaller compared to Liston, trust me, I'd be just as scared.
