A prime de La Hoya circa 97-2000? Same tactics he used but with more stamina and power... ...and before anyone kicks off - I genuinely think Floyd is the best fighter of this decade.
I think Oscar has it wrong, when saying he was worried about gassing! He probably was outboxing him for a short stage, but not for long enough to give Floyd problems! Hatton's best rounds were the first, second and the fifth - I think the first was even, second probably even (Mayweather shots vs Hatton workrate) whilst the fifth was certainly Hatton's. To beat Floyd you would need a solid defence for 12 rounds (he proved his power in the Hatton fight, which was previously questioned by many) but Cotto hasn't proved he can sustain a quality defence for the duration, he has been tagged by much lesser fighters than Floyd, though like Hatton before him, has shown the necessary chin and bottle to be able to walk through most of what is thrown. Trouble is - Floyd is bloody accurate, and will expose ANY opening!
I will respond to this in detail tomorrow... Almost 12 here, off to bed. :good Intereting post though, and you do make some good points, all of which i have considered previously however.
can someone explain to me where this jones will beat calzaghe hypetrain has come from? have any of you actually watched RJJ in the past 4/5 years?
On your first point, perhaps your correct, but on the second, I totally agree. I think anyone would be hard pressed to prove otherwise too.
PBF- ODLH could have done it, as someone said, probably during 97-00. Pavlik- Taylor had him down badly in the first fight, he didn't manage to finish him Calzaghe- Hasn't fought any greats (apart from Hopkins, who didn't do enough to win, but anyone with slightly more workrate would have won it) By the way, unless Calzaghe and PBF retire pretty soon, they won't keep their 0's. If they're still fighting in 2009 I'd say 60-40 they lose a fight. Pavlik is also pretty beatable. Also, Pavlik-Calzaghe would kill off one of the 0's!
Cant see anyone beating PBF anytime soon! Pavlik I agree looks beatable. Calzaghe - still dont see an opponent looking likely to beat him. I see some that may possibly beat him but no one that is likely to!
Calzaghe and PBF are in a different class and level than Pavlik ... at this point in their careers its going to be hard to beat them ... and they're only looking to fight guys who've been in the game for a while and have accomplished something ... so there's no chance for an upset by an up and comer. Pavlik on the other hand seems like he would have trouble with an in and out boxer. A boxer thats on his toes and that can effectively counter ... guys like Winky, Dawson, Jones, and Bute ... Oh and possibly making Pavlik fight going backwards ... i've never seen Pavlik back up and that maybe a flaw in Pavlik's fight plan. On the other hand ... he may not be easily moved and may knock out all comers.
Any fighter with "Sugar" preceding his first name (except maybe Mosley) will give Floyd Mayweather Jr. a tough time. Calzaghe is a GOOD fighter who has had some very TIMELY fights. As another poster mentioned...RJJ or Toney would drink this guy's milkshake. Pavlik. Tough to go against this guy after his 2 impressive wins over JT. But I gotta believe that someone out there can drop this guy before they get dropped. It WILL happen and it will happen when you least expect it.
Calzaghe - Now is the best chance to beat Joe, he is fading noticeably. Stylistically, a counterpuncher with good defence. The thing that worries me about Dawson is the latter, I think he'll eat a lot of shots when Calzaghe comes forward throwing his flurries. His defence is not watertight at all. However, I give him the best chance if he can get Calzaghe's respect early in the fight. The rest stand virtually no chance Pavlik - Any good boxer puncher/counterpuncher will light this guy up, especially those that can match him physically. i.e. probably not anybody at middleweight, although I've got a sneaky feeling Abraham could KO him. Kessler would do something horrible, I favour Bute, Froch, Mundine is a chance and all the top LHW's Mayweather - I don't favour anybody, but Cotto is the fight to be made. I still believe educated pressure is the best chance, and I think Cotto is the best man to implement that strategy. Forget about Margarito, he's too slow on his feet to catch up with Mayweather, and too open defensively. Mayweather will potshot him half to death
Calzaghe - looses to Jones PBF - Cotto has best chance Pavlik - No middleweight or super middleweight beats him :deal
How do you beat PBF? Affective aggression -- the opponent would have to have good enough footwork and enough strength to trap PBF along the ropes and in the corners often. Cotto has the tools. How do you beat Calzaghe? Don't worry about his slaps and don't try to outbox him. Use a big lead right, a good left hook, and uppercuts to capitalize on his bad habits. Pavlik takes him out in 10 rouds or less. Not because Pavlik is superman, but rather because styles make fights, and slappy joe is a custom made victim. How do you beat Pavlik? I've laid this one out 100 times, but here we go again. 1) A slick and clever counter puncher with a good chin and enough power to get Pav's respect would beat him. 2) Bully the bully! Later on at higher weights (175) Pavlik will probably run into someone who can beat him at his own game since he won't have such a huge size and strength advantage.
