I disagree on Muhammad - Kates. MSM should have never made it to the bell. His legs were completely gone. He probably would have stumbled around the ring and failed to beat the count if the ref hadn't held him still. He was completely defenseless when the ref resumed the action and the fight should have been stopped immediately.

Benitez was in really bad shape after one of those knockdowns and out of it for several seconds while the fighting resumed. I know that people have different opinions about this stuff but I'm of the school of thought that refs should protect guys who are in that kind of shape, even if it hurts their record or lowers the chance of later heroics.

Dennis Andries was taking a pretty good beating in his second fight with Jeff Harding. Manny Steward told him at the start of the 7th round " finish it here because there will be no eighth round." Dennis went out there and iced Harding..

An obscure fight Lance Whitaker - Lou Savarese.

In one of the middle rounds Whitaker dropped Savarese who barely got up at the count of 9. Then Whitaker beat him like a punching bag and Savarese was staggering around like a drunk man.

80% referees would've stopped the fight after the KD as Savarese seemed in no shape to continue.

99,9% referees (besides Steve Smoger, who was the referee that night) would've stopped it when Whitaker was beating him like a bag and Savarese seemed in danger to get permanently hurt.

How he survived is beyond anything. But Whitaker has tired and Lou won late rounds to get the decision.

Matthew got a get of jail card in his first fight with John Conteh when they basically plastered up his cut eyes illegally! It should have been stopped.

Smoger is usually good, but his actions here were suspect.

Not only did Savarese benefit from a long count, but it seemed like Smoger was rooting for him. After he said 8, Smoger appears to say "come on", to try to give Lou some extra motivation, in addition to a slow count

It made me think of the boxing movie Gladiator (Brian Dennehy, not Russell Crowe) where the ref is rooting for the kid and giving him encouragement during the count. That is fine in underground boxing matches in Hollywood flicks, but not real life

Mickey Ward-Alphonso Sanchez. Ward had lost every round, wasnt even in the fight. Roy Jones was commentating for HBO and calling for the fight to be stopped Ward was being outclassed so bad. Than BOOM, Ward nails Sanchez with his left hook to the body and folds him in half to win the fight. One of the most improbable comebacks Ive ever witnessed.
