I don't get why fighters are surprised when they weigh over the limit of the division they are fighting? Don't they have weighin scales in their training camp? I believe that coming overweight is a form of cheating as it does not even the field or it gives one advantage to another fighter. The fighter who drains himself will be weaker as compared to the one who does not put an effort to making the weight. 1 or 2 pounds is undertandable, but 9 pounds is just plain arrogance and disrespect to the sports and the oppoing opponent. Having a weight advantage over the opponent is downright dangerous. Example is Gatti versus Joey Gamache. Although Gatti was at 140 during weigh-in, he was so much bigger after the weigh-in that it ws like watching two combatants in two different divisions. The fact the Gatti was even at 140 during weigh-in and still inflicted so much damage is a proof that fighters who did not even attempt to make weight is more dangerous. On the scheme of things, how would you rank weight cheating in terms of the severity relative to other forms of cheating, example steroids or PEDS, loaded gloves, extreme weight draining.
The thing with Gatti-Gamache is that it is alleged that Gatti didn't even make the weight. The commissioner supposedly just announced 141 (the contract weight) for Gatti and Gatti got off and started drinking water while Gamache's camp maintained that the scale thing wasn't in the middle. If Gatti did in fact make the weight fairly, then I can't really blame him for being bigger once the fight started. He's just going by the rules. Some fighters cut more weight, some don't. The problem lies within the weigh-in procedures which went from day of the fight to the day before. I don't think it compares to things like loading gloves and PEDs, because they're still following the rules. Unofficially on fight night, Morales outweighed Barrera by 11 pounds in the 3rd fight, Corrales outweighed Mayweather by 10, Baldomir outweighed Mayweather by 12. Look how it turned out for them.
The thing with extreme weight cutting is that it might and might not work for you. The cons is that you will definitely be weak adn pray that you will regain that strentgh once you properly rehydrates. However, being bigger alone has its advantages especially if your kind of fight is the crowding, bullying type. Corrales would not gain any advantage being bigger because he fights very samll. Even the freitas fight, he was fighting a small fighters fight.
