Delaney barked out no instructions during the fight .END OF. Corbett set out to get Johnson's goat by hurling racial epiphets at him throughout the fight. Johnson always came back with a cutting rejoinder that topped his disgraceful efforts.

Delaney had some things to say during the fight. He also made the ref to check the gloves during the fight and pushed for a DQ Jeffries when one of his seconds entered the ring.

ROUND 10: Not much life marked their coming to the center of the ring. Johnson shot two lefts to the head and followed this with a short arm right to the ear. A long clinch, mixed with wrestling followed and Jeffries swung his right around the body. The men confined themselves mostly to infighting and short streaks of wrestling, Johnson always on the alert to land a punch.

Johnson whipped two lefts to the jaw and a right uppercut to the jaw made Jeffries yell "Oh!" audibly. Johnson peppered away his left and clearly outboxed his burly opponent. It was Johnson's round.

Delaney tried to get Rickard's attention at the end of the last round when Jeffries was illegally helped to his feet after a knockdown.Johnson did not protest, he knew he had Jeffries.
Delaney declared many times that Jeffries had always been afraid of Johnson. Afterwards Johnson had this to say about Dealaney's input:
" I felt of course that it did not do Jeffries any good to see his old standby behind the other man, But Delaney did not dictate to me;he just asked me to be guided by him in one thing.
he wanted me to fight very carefully and I did so.I believe I could have whipped Jeffries in 8 rounds ,but to please Delaney I went at the job cautiously and it took longer ."

The thing about Johnson is that although he lost the title, his elimination as a force in the division was somewhat artificial.

He could probably have been a significant force into his 40s.
