It will be released very soon - this month - and yes it does have an ISBN. Naturally, I will post when it is released. Glad to see you are interested.

I am interested in a few topics. The O'Brien match, the Gunboat Smith sparring session where Johnson was essentially knocked out, The Battling Jim Johnson match, the offers by promoters to get Johnson matched with Langford, Jeannette, and McVey.

Hopefully you have uncovered some new material and will have the Willard match in your book to set the record straight. The surviving film shows a competitive match many rounds before the KO.

At least you are finally conceding that it was only a sparring session. Now if you can just admit that Johnson wasnt knocked out, just down against Smith. But I suspect if Adam doesnt verbally lynch Johnson you wont care for his book...

I think it was two men in the ring for 4 rounds throwing punches, and Smith TKO'd him. It was not light sparring. That's what I think.

I call that a fight, official or not. And I think Smith who had a nice run for a while would have been a good choice for a title match, but then again he had ability, and wasn't a " hope "

Smith was 6'2" tall, not some 5"9 fighter, or a blown up middle / super middle challenging Johnson.

Klompton, consider this. From August 1912-1914, Smith had 21 fights. He was 20-0-1! beating the likes of Moran, Willard, Ross, and Flynn..four guys Johnson gave title shot to! Furthermore he beat at least three of them more impressively than Johnson did. You could argue he beat all four more impressively. * Smith floored Moran, so one could consider than a better win, as Johnson could not.*

Smith also beat Langford, and Pelky. Name fighters.

We'll see what Adam comes up with. Most writers are a little kind to their subject material. Ward's book unforgivable blackness was one that told it like it was.

As for the verbal lynching, perhaps it would be best if I didn't buy either book, or the truth might get out here and bother those who have " agenda's " on Johnson to protect.

I'd guess you haven't changed much since you were a kid, based on some stuff I read here.

Adam has given the Classic a heads up when his second volume of Jack Johnson is out.

Don' t turn this into another hate and tear down Johnson campaign on the man's thread.

Have some courtesy for a poster who has diligently pored over newspapers and articles ,and devoted a great deal of time and effort to produce a thoroughly referenced book to sit with his first volume
.A poster who is worth a million of you.

Believe what you will but it was sparring and it meant little. Smith even admitted that much. Theres no such thing as a tko in sparring. If you had ever sparred or could read anything other than kkk pamphlets youd know that. I have footage of Smith sparring Johnson and Johnson was the better, more talented fighter by miles.

Smith may have been 6'2" (thats debateable) but he could easily weigh in the 170s, so pretending he was so much bigger, stronger, etc than anyone else is a stretch.

Ive never really seen an agenda by Adam on these guys. To suggest that because he doesnt go after johnson with the same jim crow zeal you display is pretty irresponsible.

The book is 880 pages, covering from Burns to Willard, so I don't think there should be complaints about the book not being thorough. I cover all of the topics you could possibly want covered.

I even cover his Mann Act trial using the actual trial transcript, something I don't think anyone has ever done before.

Book should be available within the next week.
