Australian boxers march on

AUSTRALIA still has a full contingent of fighters in the Commonwealth Games after captain Luke Jackson and welterweight Cameron Hammond booked spots in the second round with victories at the Tolkatarta Stadium.

Jackson defeated southpaw Tsepo Lepoqo of Lesotho 6-1 in a cagey affair, with neither fighter scoring a point in the opening round.

The 25-year-old Tasmanian lightweight stepped up a gear in the second, picking Lepoqo off with two razor-sharp jabs to the chin to open up a 4-0 lead, before seeing out the final three minutes.

Hammond cruised to an impressive 7-2 win over Nigeria's Kehinde Ademuyiwa and the 21-year-old from Moree in NSW, will now meet England's Callum Smith in the next round, after the Liverpudlian beat Ritati Betero from Kiribati 5-0.

Jackson faces a tough test in his next fight against Botswana's Mmoloki Nogeng, who hammered Sierra Leone's Sahid Lansana 12-1.

The 2006 bronze medallist at the Melbourne Games, said he was happy with his performance but knows he will need to be better against Nogeng.

``It was good to get it out of the way, you are always nervous before the first fight,'' Jackson said.

``He was a southpaw and sometimes I have trouble with them, but we worked it out and I got the win.

``Nogeng was very impressive, and it will be another tough fight in a hard division.''

Three fighters are in action on Thursday, with twins Andrew and Jason Maloney in the light flyweight and flyweight division respectively, and Ibrahim Balla in the 56kg bantamweight class.

Looks like Hooper has to take on one of the gold medal favs in his next fight...Should be a great test for him.

 

Luke Jacksons Opponent looked good to start with but all show no go, bloke couldn't hit anything. Great smart fight by Jackson.

 

Hooper looks massively confident.
Switch hitting, uppercuts hitting cleanly from one meter and boxing from both orthodox and southpaw...

Woods looked awesome through the 2nd round and then gassed once the Irish plugged away at the body...Woods still managed 3 points in the 3rd and shut out the Irish keeping him scoreless...


When are these boys up next??

7-0 for the Aussies so far!

Andy Moloney started today off with a RSCI in the first round. Seemed the Soloman Islands boxer, Kava, injured his shoulder. Should keep him fit and ready for Paddy Barnes on Saturday. Huge fight!

Ibby Balla beat the Losotho rep 5:2 in a very classy fight.

Jason Moloney then won the fight of the night against Michael Conlon of Northern Ireland in a 10:10 countback. Unbelievable final round, Jason now faces the Botswana rep.

Luke Woods' second fight is any minute but I'm going to bed haha.

Correction: fight ended at 9:9. Hard to remember in that frantic final round.

Unfortunately Luke Woods was defeated by Luis Colin last night.

Damien Hooper, Luke Jackson and Cameron Hammond all up tonight. Hooper is facing Agogo from England, should be a *******.
