The mauritian boys have impressed me from the less recognised countries.

I didnt realise Julie was still fighting..He really impressed me in the Olympics and in the early am bouts I had seen of him.

I havent seen him form in the tourney yet...He should beat the Welsh kid, if he does the final should be a ******* because the sri lankan looked pretty decent tonight.

He was impressive too though Rock - did get 2 more 'bonus' points than the Indian - but won by 5.

Geez the point scoring for blows is shitting me though - would rather see about twice as many points scored based on the punches landed in most of the fights.

Just a random thought but anyone else reckon the poor effort in rewarding legit punches could have something to do with the gloves not having white scoring part marked on the gloves???

Good call - the dots missing off the gloves was the first thing I noticed when I started watching the bouts.

The scoring overall just really pissed me off!

They need some new blood in the AIS, Bodo Andreass and assistant coach Donald Abnett need to go. Bodo was supposed to help us get a gold medal at the olympics yrs ago and we havent even come close. The money spent to pay him from taxpayers money is a waste. Bodo doesnt even return calls people put on his answering machine when calling the AIS boxing. To be defeated by 3rd world countrys says something imo, the amateur AIS trainers need a complete overhaul.

i was going to go into this here but i reckon this deserves its own post topic.

Have watched the entire afternoon session....the 5 medal matches had 2 gold to the Northern Irish.
Here is my thoughts on the 5 completed this far.

Northern Ireland's Paddy Barnes was terrific winning 8-4 over Namibian Jafet Uutoni at Light Flyweight.
Barnes was countering Uutoni at will with wicked upstairs/downstairs left hooks/rips. In the pro's Barnes would have stopped Uutoni no doubt. Barnes has a big pro career around the corner. Barnes could do serious damage now in some of those depth thin Flyweight/Super Flyweight pro divisions.

At Bantamweight Manju Wanniarachchi of Sri Lanka won 7-7 thanks to a countback over fast finishing Welshman Sean McGoldrick.
Was a close fight & IMO not of the highest standard however i felt it was a bit of a hometown decision as McGoldrick should have been awarded at least 2 late points to get the deserved win. Either way Wanniarachchi who is 30 is not really going places, whereas McGoldrick is only 18 & has a big pro future ahead of him. I have this feeling if the Sri Lankan Wanniarachchi did ever go professional he would get slaughtered with those no power slapping punches.

At Lightweight, Englishman Thomas Stalker looked comfortable in breaking down tough Scottsman Josh Taylor 11-3.
Decent tuscle with Stalker being huge for a Lightweight. Taylor gave his all, however he was no match for the great boxing skills of Stalker. Stalker i believe will turn pro after the 2012 Olympics, where he will fancy a medal for himself. Post fight Taylor was in tears...as he used every once of his body to no avail.

At Welterweight Northern Irishman Patrick Gallagher defeated Englishman Callum Smith 11-6 in 1 of the best amateur fights i saw at these Commonwealth Games.
Gallagher giving away at least 3 inches was boxing terrifically on the inside...bobbing/weaving in Round 1 landing vicious counters. Round 2 Smith (the brother of professional boxers & former commonwealth medallists Paul & Stephen) came storming back with his of boxing skills from range. Round 3 the conditioned & tough Gallagher went back to what he did best in Round 1 earning the tough victory which probably should have been a touch closer. Both these guys had professional styles & i hope they do so in the near future. Gallagher is the best inside/pressure fighter i had seen at these Commonwealth Games.

At Light Heavyweight Scottsman Callum Johnson has looked sensational all tournamant & continued this on his merry way overpowering tough as nails Northern Irishman Thomas McCarthy 8-1.
Johnson who should probably win best boxer of the Commonwealth Games was throwing some of the most vicious uppercuts on the inside of the entire Commonwealth Games that had McCarthy bloodied from the get go. McCarthy tried hard but Johnson was in another league & is ready as he ever will be to turn professional.
Johnson is definitely a man worth keeping an eye on in the pro ranks & could go very far.

Great Britain must be pretty pleased going into 2012.

If they were fighting as a unified team they would have absolutely cleaned up.

Far different story of course with the Cubans, East Euros, Chinese, Americans etc contesting..but they can be pretty happy with this meet.

Bring on the Olympics .

Yeah thanks mate i thought McGoldrick looked decent & deserved the win.

I cant be bothered giving my opinions on the 2nd half of the day of finals...might do it tonight after the Thursday Night Fights.

I honestly thought a couple more bouts were somewhat controversial including the Indian Super Heavyweight who was just pathetic with some of his grappling/low blow tactics. Whatever it takes from the ref also to ensure a hometown decision happens.
The Indian was so bad to watch that if you put in a tape of the classicly boring Chris Bird & DaVarryl "Touch Of Sleep" Williamson right after...it would actually seem like world class action from Bird & Williamson.
