Common factors among the lineal heavyweight champions

why exactly is Hart a lineal champion?

Whom did he beat for that designation?

I would consider the lineal title going from Jeffries to Johnson.

 

Young was 6'-2".

 

All of them were men.

 

Young was not as tall as Greg Page, who was in the 6'3"-6'2" range.

 

Page was 6'-3"...Young was 6'-2".

Holyfield 6'1"

 

Ali, Holmes, Foreman, Holyfield, and Norton were between 6'2 1/2" - 6'4"...... depending on your source. At the very least 6'2" - 6'3".

Anyway, they were all solid built HWs who could carry at least 215 Lbs. and still be lean... Foreman still looked good at 235 Lbs. (Qawi fight), Holyfield and Norton were still ripped at 220+Lbs. Ali and Holmes carried 220 Lbs very well. These men had the right combination of height, weight, reach (Holyfield's is the shortest and has the shortest reach at 77 1/2"), and most importantly skill. Norton was the least durable of this group.

Then you have the big men who were very talented like Bowe, Lewis, and the Klitschko's. 6'5" - 6'7" (some sources have V. Klitschko at 6'8"), reaches over 80", and able to carry over 240 Lbs. very well. All if these men were very strong and punched very hard. Bowe and V. Klitschko were more durable than the other two.

The 3rd group are the smaller guys who are still big enough to compete with the above fighters due to their combination of skill, durability, and power. I'm talking about Tyson (under 6' but still ripped even at 225 Lbs., his best weight was about 217). I'm also talking about Frazier (Tyson's height but not as thick upstairs, carried up to 210 well), Liston (about Tyson's size but a little taller and a much longer reach), and Louis (6'2" and carried 205 well). Louis almost fits in with the first group.

The last group of men would be giving up a lot of size and to be honest it's hard to imagine them beating too many of the fighters in the 1st two groups. I'm talking about Marciano, Charles, Tunney, Johnson, Dempsey, and some others.

 

I agree that sometimes people make too much about the "Lineal" title...... but have you really seen some these fights you talk about? Holyfield clearly beat Bowe in '93. Fan Man? If anything the break helped Bowe more than Holyfield (Holyfield started having muscle spasms in his back during the break). Holmes beat Holyfield??? You're crazy if you believe that.

I agree that Foreman beat Briggs and a case can be made that Holyfield beat Moorer in their first fight (very close though).

 

Marvin Hart beat Jack Root for the vacant HW Title. Jeffries retired and did not fight for 6 years. We don't still consider Gene Tunney the Lineal HW Champ do we? How about Lennox Lewis? At some point the Lineage must start over.
