think mcguigan could ffight for n.ireland in the commonwealths because hes boxing club he faught in at the time was in belfast as far as i know that was the stipulation
Irish boxers born in the Republic cant generally box in the Comm. Games, simple as that but it has been got around by (like Barry) fellas boxing for a 6 counties club. BTW the Northern lads did superb, fair play to them, so far ahead of our biased and unreal(!) expectations. Also of the big five only Paddy The Bored Double Gold Medalist would be the generally recognised no 1 in Ireland-and he has serious opposition coming down the tracks! McCarthy is a clear no 2 and Gallagher has unreal opposition at his weight, he might be number 3? O'Kane is behind O'Neill and probably Quigley(lost 10-2 to him this year) with Ward, Blaney etc in a q behind him(ps how good was Darren?). Ward has a lot of bodies to get past. The fact is, and not to deminish what the boys did, the Irish Seniors championships are a step above the Commonwealth Games, despite the presence of the British, themselves an emerging power on the World stage.
I thought it was because he was from Ulster (the proper Ulster with all 9 counties like in the GAA and fleadhs etc)...though he married a protestant woman from N Ireland (which is why his da used to sing Danny Boy instead of the national anthem before fights...and got him a much bigger non sectarian following too) and I think he might have at some point took up british citizenship so he could fight in more places/events edit and yip youre right mattdonnellon i think he fought out of a club in Fermanagh
BTw JJ Nevin boxes out of Cavan and Willie McLoughlin out of Donegal, -proper Ulster!- they would love the C'wealth Games!
Im not 100% sure but according to wiki "McGuigan started his juvenile boxing career at the Wattlebridge Amateur Boxing Club, Co. Fermanagh and later moved to the Smithborough Amateur Boxing Club, Co. Monaghan. Under the guidance of trainers Danny McEntee and Frank Mulligan he rapidly established himself as a exceptional boxer. He won the All Ireland Amateur Championship in 1976 having defeated Martin Brereton" I always thought McLaughlin was a Co Derry name, I'd have thought they should be able to fight in the Commonwealth games if they liked (as should anyone in Ireland...after all the whole island of Ireland was once under the evil clutches of the land of the oppressor!)...though unfortunately not all of us are free yet!
